sunday, SUNDAY, SUNDAY at Maniac Hill. Mirko Celestino makes a US appearance with other Saeco riders along with Danny Pate, Bobby Julich, and Fred Rodriquez. Go Mirko! (Hope Danny wins the jersey.)

Are you talking about the race in Philadelphia? The Wachovia race?

I went to the one in Lancaster on Tuesday. It was great. A Dane named Alex something (US Postal Service) won, but Bobby Julich had a 21 second lead with 14 miles to go. That course is tough, they say.

Max van Heeswijk won. Don't know where you got the 'Alex' from!

Well, I guess it's really the Manayunk Wall, but Maniac Hill describes it well too. Yes, the race in Philly this Sunday.

Sorry to see Bobby J. lose.

Sorry, I guess the X factor got me confused between Alex and Max.

That Manayunk Hill is incredibly steep. Even to walk up it. Last year, I was all: how the hell can they ride up this hill? Then I watched as they rode up it like it was almost flat. Amazing.

Too bad Fred didn't win outright and Saunier-D won, even though it wasn't Tim Johnson on the winners podium I guess he gets a cut of that fat purse!

Glad Freddie won the jersey. At last, our stars and stripes will be flying with pride in europe on a classy rider.

I still don't "get" the USPRO race.

Yes, I know how it works and I like Freddie Rodriguez..... but he came in fourth.

I realize most of the truly top US talent is in Europe in June and that the Wachovia series has a quality purse that attracts alot of Euro pros but I'd still like to see a race for the stars and stripes jersey a true "national" championship, just like in other nations.

I agree. This race format was started when the base of American pros was to small to make the race feasible. But they had to find a way to put the jersey on someone so they came up with this. I think that with the growth of the pro ranks in the US, the time has come for them to rethink the format and consider a US pros only race. If they needed to beef up the start numbers, invite select US amateurs. Or possible invite the teams that US pros ride with. And position it so that the majority of US pros can participate. June is a big month and right now it would seem to me that many of the Euro based pros could fit in the ride after the Dauphine. And if a few could not, well then, such is life. I mean Julich made it over here for the race, as did Rodriguez. Perhaps we might lose some of the Grand Tour team riders, but then many national championships do.

It would be nice to see Freddy get a stage of the TdF while wearing the Stars and Stripes.

That's probably not going to happen. Acqua & Sapone has not been invited to the TDF. :(
