Are disk brakes really worth the extra money and if so should you get a bike with them on the bike or just buy them alone and put them on your bike yourself.

Remember that your bike will need to have the proper mounting points for disk brakes if you ever want them.

Depends on what you do with them. Usually a good pair of V's do the job.

I agree with mindbogger about the v's though. For most people disc brakes are just a fancy accessory.

I can stop on any terrain using only 1 finger on both hands with my Hayes HFX-9's DH with 8" rotors. I lie you not. If you need to stop anywhere / anytime then get discs. I am impressed with the Hayes MX1 DH version too. It's what came stock on my HARO Xtreme X2. I only changed to the hydraulic's because I already had them on another bike. Otherwise the MX1 (2004) would suit me fine. No matter how muddy or wet riding conditions are, you'll stop on a dime everytime, period....

i am sort of going through the same decission process my thinking is this:
1)i am really an xc rider but i ride some very technical and fast down hill...stopping power is a must and on some of my local descents i am really clamping down hard on my v-brakes to gain control of my rig...a good set of hydraulic discs should help with this and also improve brake modulation
2)I am a weight wennie and don't want to add much more....in most cases moving away from v-brakes garuntees significant weight gain....unless you are willing to pay top dollar for the light stuff.
3)if i were a beginner rider or not ridding a lot of very fast technical descents I would probably focus on getting the lightest bike i could afford to help remove bike weight from my improvement equation...in most cases this would be a bike without disc brakes
