Are any of you route planners for your local brevets? Do you find yourselves thwarted by construction every year?

Last year the province dug up an entire road ... removed it completely ... rendering my 600K route impossible to ride.

This year they're doing "Preservation and Overlay" on a whole heap of roads around here ... which involves removing the top layer of pavement and turning the road into a corrugated surface which is very difficult to ride.

I've just been out to check my 300K route for this coming weekend, and I've got 17 km of this stuff. <<sigh>> And they really didn't need to do anything to that particular road.

Now I've got to figure out how to re-route the riders.

Texas has a road condition website that shows where the construction is. It's especially helpful when they tear out bridges for replacement.

Overlay sounds like another word for Chip Seal. It's cheap and delays real repaving for years. It's ubiquitous on Texas highways. Some is worse than others. The best defense is wide tires and lower air pressure.

Yeah, I've got a document listing all the construction going on this year ... and they seem to be doing a lot of it in this area despite saying that they were going to significantly cut back on construction this year.

They haven't even got to the overlay part yet ... they're still on the rip the road up stage.
