Road Cycling - Do these guys use steel handle bars?

no, it's steel.

lots of track bars are steel. they need to be strong. weight really isn't an issue on the track.

Most clipless systems can't hold up the reliability of clips and straps, and even then they break a strap occasionally.

no - titanium is the wrong material for the job.

It is less stiff than steel - harder and requires more energy to manufacture. Not worth it.

Depending on what alloy and process is used, steel and titanium can have interchangeable properties across the board. Considering these bikes aren't mass produced, I don't think mass manufacturing tactics are even considered. Then again, if they're just going in circles on a track, I guess weight doesn't matter that much.

And as for the pedal issue, the French team modified their Looks with a bolt at the back to hold the cleat in. Kind of impractical, but as long as you've got a mechanic with a spanner handy...

yeah...saw them too....*shudder* i prefer the solution put forth by those lovable "cutters" in breaking away. just duct tape the damn foot to the damn pedal and be done with it!! ;)

as for the two straps thing that someone else mentioned...yeah, sort of, it's a dual strap, so, essentially, one really wide strap with two buckles. i use two separate straps on both of my track bikes, i run one through the normal holes, and another through the holes at the front, so the front one is around the "knuckles" of my feet and the back one is right where it's supposed to be. so much more secure...oh yeah, metal clips, leather strap for at least the rear ones as they take the most abuse.
