Ok I have noticed that HRMs are actually affordable these days! I have found the above 2 monitors for 120-140 NZD. I have the following on the Sigma from their site:
The PC 1300 features
Pulse
Clock
Stopwatch
Date
Alarm clock
Adjust heart rate upper/ lower limits
Audio alarm for out-of-zone
heart rates
Training times in and outside
the limits
Maximum heart rate
Average heart rate
Calorie accumulation
Recovery time operation
Fat grams burned
Can anyone dig up what functions the Polar A1 HRM has? their site doesn't have alot. (Polar USA)

I'd go with the sigma. The polar doesn't seem to offer much for the money. The A1 is pretty much bottom of the line.
each red dot in the table is the listed feature. This A1 does not have many features. Basic watch that gives HR, av HR and total exercise time.
I have the Sigma Sport PC1300. I paid about $30USD for it from Performance Bike. It seems to work great, but I have nothing to compare it to, so I can't say for sure. I have only used it a few times, but I have not had unrealistic readings yet, it is easy and intuitive to use, and it is not uncomfortable. I did a lot of looking before I bought it and could not find another HRM for a similar price with as many features.

yeah exactly.....about 3x what you guys are paying......
I got the A3 for a birthday present last month. It was USD$80. For the same value, I exchanged it for a Sigma PC1300, a Cateye Astrale and a Performance jersey. I found the receiver of the PC1300 to be bulkier than the A3, but it had more functions. Go with the PC1300.
Does anybody know if you can swim with the sigma? It says "water resistent", however that is very vague.
