Triathlon - Pretty Sweet.... Garmin Forerunner 310XT

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
This looks AWESOME. Except, of course, for the fact that I read somewhere that HR data doesn't get transmitted during the swim. Not sure if that's accurate or why it is. That would be a pretty lame black mark on what looks otherwise like an awesome product.
Swim proof, enough battery life for a mere mortal's IM... very cool.

i'm getting it...and ditching my FR305 as soon as it arrives!
i heard the reason the HR data is not transmitted during swim is because 2.4ghz signal does not go through water very well. not sure if that's true or not...that's what someone at slowtwitch wrote...
The one question I have is whether it's easily handlebar-mountable for the bike leg. The 305's multisport kit is great in that regard.
It would seem that unless you want your wetsuit filling with water you'll need to wear the 310XT OVER your wetsuit, which might add a step at T1--especially if it goes back on your wrist for the bike.
That seems kind of clunky/heavy. Swimming, I don't typically like to wear a watch, I feel like it throws off my cadence; of course that's just me. The 405 seems like a good all-around watch/GPS, and REI has them on sale right now (until 5/10 I believe).

I did do one olympic tri with my suuntu t3. It was light enough i forgot about it and didn't hit "lap" in the transitions.

I have the FR405. I won't use it during races, but I'm okay with that. As a training tool it's awesome - and was already at my upper price limit...

That is very likely true, and there is another probably an additional reason:
The HR picks up heart rate via the two electrically conductive pads on the backside.
As soon as you jump in the water, the water forms a short-circuit between the two pads.

Don't polar HRM's work while swimming, though?
Suunto has a "Memory belt" for their T series that stores the HR data from the swim on the belt for transfer at a later time too.

I suspect that it works in water but that they have gotten some unreliable readings due to the properties of air vs. water and they just want to cover themselves.

i think the same. someone on ST used the 305 in water...and it worked fine, HRM and GPS and everything. i'm too wussy to try my 305 in water! lol
