I'm just wondering how fast this guy's going, looks like a pretty good rate going up a long hill. The look on the guy's face always gives me a little inspiration when I'm tackling a hill.

I'd put him at 10-12 mph at the beginning when he passes the other rider and maybe around 15 just before he stands for the final sprint. Great effort.

It looks like they were doing a time trial (although it seemed farther than .5mi).

Distance: Approximately .5 miles.
Climbing: Approximately 350 vertical feet
Grade: Ranging from 10% to 20% (averaging 14%)
ELEVATION PROFILE FOR THE TIME TRIAL (http://kingofjester.com/ttprofile.html)
Location: From Jester Village to the 1st cross street: Winterbury Dr. [map]
Description: Starting almost flat, the climb gets steeper at the top with a false flat sprint to finish it off.

That guy has a ****y riding form , he's not smooth to much upper body movement.

Whew, 10mph, I don't feel so bad, lol.

yeah, he's really pushing a high gear too. but all in all it's a good climb; at least by my standards.

the guy he passed who was climbing standing up had fine form. i'd rather have "bad form" and outclimb a guy any day.

by the way, his form isn't really bad. he had good rhythm, and all sprinters and climbers climb by rhythm.

Wait, so is it better to climb by form or rythm?
Actually, to go back to basics, what exactly is the difference between form and rythm?

I just climb till I climb no more in my seat, then I stand, then sit when I'm tired...

I attack long steep hills. Sure, I may be bonked by the top, but take a sick satisfaction in not seeing my speedo dip below 10-12 MPH.

Yes, I know that's not correct, but it works for me, and my leg muscles are proof. ;)

*sigh* i need to climb more...

I don't think this guy can bike... unless he was worn out.

Also, I'm not sure how his feet are hooked to the pedals....

And he's over-clothed, heavy.

Sometimes I think that cyclists wearing lycra (?) plastic shorts
do that, because they feat they'll drop a steamy turd in their shorts
while putting in a lot of effort on the road, and they won't be
embarrassed by it.

well, first off, let me say that i suck and i'm no expert. now to my babble

generally good "form" i presume means no rocking left and right like the guy who's climbing is. more efficient that way. that said, a certain jan ullrich would rock left and right when he was climbing l'alpe d'huez. you just do that when you're tired and struggling and giving it everything you got. rocking back-and-forth is also something that lance does when he sprints (although that's standing), and is recommended because it's natural and gives you a sense of "rhythm". by rhythm i'm just thinking about myself when i climb a hard hill; my cadence is rhythmic, my body is rhythmic, etc. like there's a drum beating in sync with my climb, and that drum is my body.

that looked like it was the last few hundred feet of a 5k, uphill time trial, i'm betting he was worn out. i'm sure he was using clipless pedals with some kind of crazy adidas(?) shoe. and it looked pretty chilly out there. the other guy was wearing basically the same stuff, and the spectators were dressed for chilly weather as well. i don't really go in for the whole lycra thing, so i have no comment about that...

Couldn't have been a 5k TT as the only bike races offered seems to have been a .5mi sprint/TT up a hill (climbing finish) and a 5k course with the finish after a decent. Seeing how he definitely never started to decline, I'm going to guess it was the .5mi TT.

I would say its probably around 15mph and when he is up in the sprint at the end he is probably up around 18-19

Thank you sir, I'll be KaZaAing that later! Is "Song 2" the actual name of the song?

That neighborhood is where my brother in law lives (I think). San Antonio? If its the same hill then it is no joke in a car.

its west Austin where all the rich yuppies live

i would guess 10mph climb and 18mph end sprint

no way was he, or could he, scale that thing at around 15mph like someone above suggested!

This is a sorry thread.

First, the winner (the guy in the video) did the 0.5 mi TT in 2 min 26 sec. So that's 12.3288 mph.

Second, I can't believe all the bashing of his form/clothing/etc. He posted the best time. He did something right. Give the guy some credit.

Not to mention that there are a lot of professional riders who look like animals on their machines. However, they win races. Which is better - to look in perfect form and lose, or to look a bit out of form, and win?

Unfortunately, I look a bit out of form, and still lose. :D

It was a TT under 3 minutes, so you figure he should put a lot of full body muscle into it, instead of an efficient form.

That's what I was thinking. It's so short that you can go full out and throw yourself into it. I would think that efficient form is more important when you've got to scale several multi-mile climbs over a 120 mile course. Then you want to reserve as much energy as possible throughout, while maintaining speed, to ensure you have something left to kick at the finish if needed - minimal extraneous movement would contribute to that end.

I guess that is why GC riders appear quite smooth when climbing the mountains, while in races like LBL, the riders heave all over their bicycles as they ride over the short hills.

I wonder if I could run a time similar to that. I got a 2:15 800 on the track...I'll bet I could beat a lot of people running that were biking.

But remember it is 0.5 miles UPHILL at a 14% grade. Still think you could do it?

It it so easy to WATCH people climb. Yet, it's so hard when you do it yourself.

i think I could do it under 3:30. maybe 3:00. I'd really have to see the hill.
