1. Disconnect the front shift cable (important).
2. Position the front derailleur on the seat tube. The outer cage should be parallel with the chainrings. The outer cage should just miss the big chainring by about 2mm when you push if over with your finger.
3. Set the low gear limit stop. Put the chain on the biggest cog in back (with the chain disconnected, it will go onto the granny ring in front), the inner cage should miss the chain by about 1mm.
4. Make sure that your shifter is in its lowest position. Pull the shift cable just taut with a needle nose plier and attach it to the derailleur.
5. Check to be sure that you can access all gear combinations. If you can't make that happen with just cable tension adjustments, go back to step one and start over.
6. Put the chain into the big/little combination. Set the high gear limit stop so that the outer cage misses the chain by about 1mm.

One step to add: Before tensioning and anchoring the cable, make sure that the cable adjusting barrel on the down tube or head tube is NOT completely threaded in to it's socket; you want to be able to both add and remove cable tension for fine tuning.

Another thing to be careful about but can be easily missed. There is a small notch behind the screw where you attach the cable. When connecting the cable to the derailleur make sure the cable doesn't go straight between the notch and the screw. The cable should pass behind and around the notch and then to the screw.
That may sound a bit strange but believe me it makes a huge difference.
If in doubt go the Shimano website (http://bike.shimano.com), they have pdf files of all their manuals with installation instructions.
