Training & Nutrition - Miles in May... How many did you guys do?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Okay, well, being where I am, I thought that I could honor the Indy 500 season by trying to do 500 miles in May. My previous monthly high was 435 miles (in December of all times!). I crushed that this month with 560.38 miles. I'm trying my first century on Saturday, so, hopefully, that will be an easy kickstart to 600 in June. How many did you guys get in May? Any goals for June?

Just 320 (although double April since the weather's improved). Would have easily done 450 were it not for rain and some weekends away. Goal for June is 400 (again, two weekends where I have to work overtime). July - 450.

Got 528.38 in May. My farthest (or is it furthest?) so far. Not sure if I can equal that distance for June, though.

Got 660 in May and hope to do a little better in June. Should have about 2/3 of that in one week, because we are doing Bike VA which is somewhere between 350 and 400.

411 in May, including one century ride. Work has been busier with more travel weeks, so my commuting miles fell off a bit towards the end of the month.

Summer almost here..So miles picking up..For May was 564. Total for last 5 months= 2487...April was 468. Sometimes summer can be a bummer..If if take off from commuting some, it is the depths of summer...
Work is another 20 miles inland. Over the pass into Riverside county, you can expect another 15 degrees warmer temperatures.Over there summer is often over 100. Over 95, I would almost actually rather drive.

320 commuting miles
+ 149 non-commuting miles
---------
= 469 total

The most YTD. After I get my road bike, I expect these to take off...

504 miles since April. Probably 350 of those being in May.

Some of these are off road, and all my road miles are with 2.1 tires on a 33 pound bike :)

413.1 in May and 109 in April as I started riding 18 Apr after 2+ years off. So I did good. Looking for about the same in June as my schedule does not give me much extra free time.

269.5 miles for May. I also lost 6 pounds. Down to 215 from 245 this time last year. I hope to do 300 or more for June. I only ride every other day, and try to do a longer ride on the weekend. I have been lifting weights for a month as well, so that may slow the weight loss, but I don't think it will slow the fat loss. I feel so sore right now, I doubled my workout today because I wasn't feeling as sore as I thought I should. Dumbells will kill you if you give them a chance. Best -

Hope it appropriate to ask a question about mileage...For those who get over like 700 miles. What are you doing.Recreation, commuting. Double Centuries every weekend? Those approaching a 1,000 miles a month? Wow..Can we get that kind of mileage and have another life..Retired? What? Proud of you!
Think my best month ever..Was like 950 miles.......
Think I commuted lots, was getting ready for a two week tour. And that tour was like 400 miles.

I think everyone has their own story of how they get miles. I try to ride 100 miles during the week, usualy spread over Tues, Wed. and Thurs. During the week I ride early before going to work. The weekends are the fast group rides that add another 100 miles. Monday and Fridays are off for recovery.

I am not critical..A little envious I think..I ride on average say 600 miles a month..What helps maintain that is commuting..
But the miles, translate that to time..Wow..
Lets say a person averages 14 mph.. 1000 miles a month and 250 weekly average..That is almost 18 hours of riding a week.Go out 5 days= almost 4 hour rides.. Is there ever enough sunshine.
That would certainly make you ready for some long distance riding. 1000 miles is like 3 days of continous riding per month.
Don't see how older riders does that and have families, etc. Cool.
I often do about 600 which must put me on the bike for almost 2continous days of the month.
Have to be commuters.

Older riders is a relative term as I see myself as an older rider compared to my group, but am just about to turn 43. One problem in your time calculation is the avg speed of 14. That number should be 20 or higher. Group rides will push it much higher even for the average.

I thought 14 to be low..Considering everyone..Probably many average only 11... Maybe 15 be a better average..Still a lot of hours on the bike..Even at 20.

I didn't know so many people wrote down their mileage at the end of the month. I am lucky to get the cable bill payed. I am riding 20+ miles every day on rock and dirt roads. I missed one day last month.

Chalk me up for 600.

I average 16.6 mph on an urban 7 mile commute this morning with lots of red lights (I don't break them) and heavy rush hour traffic. That's on a MTB with 1.3" slicks and a 15-25kg bag on my back (depends if my "laptop" is in there or not). I cruise between 20 and 25 mph on the flat depending on wind conditions.

I'd say 19-20 mph is an easy average speed for roadies, even with lights, traffic and climbs.

Well I kinda got lucky with May since there were 5 full weekends in that month. I do the majority of my riding on the weekends and usually only get in one or two short rides (under 40 mi) during the weekdays. I was doing 140 to 150 each weekend this last month. Add that to the 5 weekdays I rode, and I got in 894.71 miles. I average about 15 to 15.5 mph, so my typical weekend is about 9 to 10 hours of riding. Then ya tack on a weekday ride of 2 or 3 hours, and I was getting in 10 to 13 hrs per week.

But like I said... that high mileage this last month was mostly due to the fact that there were 5 full weekends in May. My biggest week in May was 238 miles... the smallest was 141.

June only has 4 weekends, so I'll be lucky to get in 600 miles... maybe 700.

Whereas in August there is again 5 full weekends, and I'll be training up for a big ride, so there's a good chance I can do 1000 miles that month.

I rode 370 in May. My goal for June is 425. This is my first year riding (A couple hundred miles last year) after a 7 year lay off. Average speed has been in the 17.5-18.5 range. Hopefully I'll get to 20+ by the end of the summer.

I only managed 352.56 for May with the first week off due to work schedule, and 19,922 calories burned during the rides.

It's getting hotter here, so 0500hrs ride starting time.
Two 25-30 miles rides during the week before work and I'll try 70-80 on the weekends. Hard to keep up this life style.
Someone mentioned keeping tracked of rides. I have logged every ride I have done since May of last year. Just a little ritual I go through after every ride.
Hopefully, June will be closer to the 420 mile mark and that's good enough. Don't want to burn out, just keep up the base miles.

The solution is not to wait for sunshine. My evening commutes are in the dark. My after-work rides are in the dark. I'm about to add a pre-dawn ride into that mix, which will also be in the dark. And of course, I have no hesitation going out in the rain either. In fact, I wake up everyday hoping it happens.

I would hope for rain and cloud cover if it was 30 degrees every day....and night!! :)

Try riding in the rain when it's 8 degrees! ;)

I did just that in Tasmania last "summer" on the infamous Gordon River Road. It was quite a few below 8 degrees too! Geez it gets cold down there -- and I broke a chain! Mind you, I'd quite happily do it all again.

You must've enjoyed being able to ride hard without sweating 5 litres an hour, for a change :)

Put it this way: six passes in two days -- all on about 1.5 litres of water in total. Yep, it was a nice change. :)
