Northern California - Group rides laeving from SF city

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a road ride leaving from somewhere in the city? I am in town in May/June for work and need to stay active. I think I'll be staying around the Union Square area.
leaving at around 6.30am and 18-20mph average would be good.
Cheers
This ride (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=537670) is leaving from Sports Basement at 9am this Saturday, if you're here already.

Unlikely to maintain 18-20mph, though you could do hill repeats if you feel the need. :thumb:

There's the Roasters Ride.
Roasters Ride
Day: Saturday
Time: 08:00 AM
Meet: Golden Gate Bridge
8:00am sharp at the south side of the Golden Gate Bridge with a second meeting point of 9:00am at Coffee Roasters, San Anselmo.
A very organic ride which has been going for a long time - people show up every sat at 8:00 unless its a hurricane - there are always riders there. A really competitive 45 mile ride with 17 miles of preamble and 17 of warm down riding out and back from the bridge - 80 miles in total.
Route: San Francisco - San Anselmo - Fairfax - Nicasio - Point Reyes Station - Olema - Samuel Taylor Park - Fairfax - San Francisco.
Post on here and you'll most likely find some takers.
Also check out the group rides here: http://www.bikecal.com/index.asp#
Union Square also gives you easy access to BART, which can take you to the start of many great riding opportunities in the East Bay (group and solo).
As noted above, I don't think any group ride from SF or the East Bay will average 18-20 mph even if you exclude stops (except perhaps racing teams). But unless you are Lance, I think you will find plenty of challenging rides here that will have you struggling to average something less than 18 mph.

Thanks for the info fellas. Where I come from (Brisbane, Australia) it is relatively flat so 18mph is not too quick. The main thing for me to cope with will be riding on the wrong side of the road.
Is the golden gate bridge ok to ride across?
Cheers again:thumb:

As a Brit I can assure you that you'll quickly get used to driving/riding on the "other side" - checking over your shoulder might take a bit of practice. You clearly have to ride San Bruno Mountain (well small hill) as it's also in Brisbane, just south of SF.
If you're not used to the hills, that's probably the biggest adjustment - I find that I guage the difficulty of rides here by what hills are climbed more than average speed.

I'm two blocks from Union Square, so if you want me to pick you up, say around 8:15 and bring you over Sports Basement for our ride.
BTW All rides start out on the right hand side and left hand side on the way back:innocent:

+1, I've never had a problem with riding on the other side but I now seem to check both shoulders no matter where I am. :p

Double shoulder checking eh, that sounds a bit obsessive - compulsive hehe. better safe than sorry...
Thanks for the offer taxi777. I'll message you to get your contact details if that is OK
I wonder of there are any rides that end at a pub (bar)?
