Might've had some sort of compulsive disorder... I remember reading a lengthy article about a book thief; he stole thousands of books and kept them all for himself. He just really, really liked books. Had some nice stuff, first editions and the like.
Bikes are at least as attractive as books, IMHO. Not that I'm amassing 500 of them.

why did he stock pile them? he must've stolen even more than that! :eek:
maybe he was planning on throwing all of them on Ebay at once and retiring on whatever he made. if he sold them one by one he would have a greater chance of being caught but if all sold at the same time by the time he got his money and somebody realizes he is selling stolen bikes he could be long gone

According to what I read he didn't steal all of them, started at
swap meets etc.

had collected, and some that he had probably stolen, during his 64 years.
"He bought bikes, he traded bikes, but we think towards the last 10
to 15 years, when it became almost like an obsession with him, he
started to steal bikes," senior constable Kevin Warburton told the
Age newspaper.
It took police seven days to remove the bikes along with hundreds of
frames, wheels and other parts from James' house and have invited
anyone who thinks they can still identify their lost bike to contact them.
James died after hitting his head when he fell off a bike.
Now my e-baying and projects don't look so bad. . . at least not yet
but she is keeping an eye on the number of frames that follow
me home :D

heck no, if someone died on a bike they stole from me i wouldnt want it back. it's some sort of voodoo hexed devil bike.

i would think of it more as a good luck bike if the theif that stole it died on it. the bike that killed the bad guy is always good luck :)
