Hi I'm currently restoring a '62 Jack taylor Tandem and was wondering if anyone knows the headset size?
I read a previous post for a '77 tandem which took a "French" headset. Will mine be the same? What is a "French" headset and are all French headsets the same size?
My steerer takes a 22.2 mm stem. The steerer tube external diameter is 27.5-28.0 mm (using a steel rule) and has 26 and a bit TPi.
Here is a link to some photos if anyone is interested.http://s735.photobucket.com/albums/ww351/XKss21/Jack%20Taylor/ It's made some progress since I last uploaded, the frame is ready for primer.
Thanks a lot
Tim

On a Jack Taylor? I wouldn't think so unless someone swapped forks on it, and/or it was a custom build. Your bike is english, and so the headset should be english. I'm assuming your thread measurements are off, as your steerer diameter is certainly off. Here's a link to a headset crib sheet Sheldon Brown put together. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/cribsheet-headsets.html
So my guess is the old english standard of 1 X 24 TPI. But it's an easy diagnosis. Take the fork to your LBS, and thread an english locknut on it. If it goes on all the way, it *ain't* french!

Hi again, thanks for the ideas. I'm certain it has its original forks and I've tried putting an English thread on it with no success. There is no ridged keyway groove on the steerer tube and one side of the thread is filed flat. On Sheldonbrown's crib sheet a 28mm French tandem headset is mentioned which is "obselete and rare" with 25.4 TPI.
Sounds like this could be it??

Beagle2, here's the rub ... you said your steerer "takes" a 22.2 stem. By that I'm assuming you pulled a stem marked 22.2 out of it. If so, (and the stem has NOT been obviously filed down), it can't be french. A 22.2 stem won't fit in a french, (22mm) steerer. Trust me, I've made them fit, and it takes a good bit of filing!
YET, if memory serves, the filed flat on the steerer you describe was a french design!! So ... what have we got?
Question: Do you have any of the original threaded parts of the headset, and will they thread on?
