I've been commuting by bike for seven or eight years, around 15 miles each way. I do it maybe 2 or 3 times per week, generally skipping the nastier weather. I often try to make it through the winter but this past one was so windy that I probably only did it once a week. Cold is ok but I always seem to be heading into the wind and my knees are getting too old for that stuff.

I ride a hybrid, Trek 7100. Cheap but I've put many miles on it and replaced most of the parts. I'd get a better bike but I have to leave it outside at work so I just don't think it's worth doing. Maybe soon.

I'm pretty much in the same situation you're in. I have a similar bike and I'm also affected a great deal by the wind. Our bikes are too upright and just don't have that aerodynamic positioning that road bikes have to ride through the wind. I feel like I'm a big kite whenever it gets windy. I wanted to get a new bike but I just settled on modifying mine a little by raising the seat, cutting the handlebars, and adding some slick road tires.

I started out with a mountain bike which I rode on the pavement more than trails. Two years later I got a road bike and it's been great since.

I like upright for the most part; the least part being the wind. It wasn't a big factor until this year though.

I didn't bike this morning. Yesterday was a bit tough on the old legs (57). I did some NorticTrack stuff at the gym, then a stretch class, and then two hours of tennis (doubles). I thought I was going to bike this am but my legs were sort of numb when I got out of bed so I took the train. When I don't bike I try to hit the pool in Flushing Meadows Corona Park after work.

The rest of the week looks great for biking though. Finally, not much rain nor wind in the forecast!
