Hi, I live in Ann Arbor, MI and would consider some southern Ontario riding. Has anyone crossed from Detroit into Windsor on a bicycle and back again? Where can one do it and how? What happens with Customs and Immigration?

According to the websites for the bridges, tunnels and the truck ferry, You cannot bicycle across the border between Detroit and Windsor. One option for the bridges seems to be to use a cab.
There are 2 ferries north of lake St Clair, one in Walpole-Algonac and one in Marine City that take bicycles and even have rates listed for bikes.
I am planning a bicycle trip around Lake Erie this summer and the detour around the Detroit crossing is adding a lot of extra miles.
If you need the web addresses for the ferries, I can locate them.

Wow, why would I be more dangerous while on a bike than while in my car?
Thank you!

You could also detour to Pelee Island and ferry it across there, not sure how many more km it would add or chop off your trip, but it's a nice little place... find out when the bugs are gone though, I went when mayflies or something were hatching and they were everywhere... they didn't bite or anything but it was annoying, and would be moreso on a bike.

Hey everyone. This is my first post and I'm happy to be here.
You could also take the tunnel bus that goes between the 2 cities. You can catch it right at the entrance to the tunnel on the US side where the cars pay the toll to go through. If you go on off-peak hours, bringing the bike shouldn't be a problem. Most of the drivers are pretty cool. Toll is $3.75CAD. Might be best to give them a call before you use it to make sure the bike is OK to bring.

Forgot to mention that as of June 1st, new rules are in effect for documentation needed to cross the border. Passports or enhanced drivers licenses are preferred. Check out http://www.getyouhome.gov/html/eng_map.html for all the details.
