View Full Version : Mtn. gearing on road hubs?

Can someone tell me what is involved if I want to put a 'mtn cassette' like a 11-32 onto a standard 10-speed road wheel?

If it's something as simple as just slap it on and go, is it safe to assume I'd need a new RD? I have access to 9-speed and 10-speed rear derailleurs, but they are all short cages.

Basically I'm picking up a Surly Cross Check frame and I was hoping to dump as much of the parts from my road bike onto the Surly and use it temporarily (going on a 3-week trip) as a touring bike. I thought about getting a 12-27 for the back, but I'm also considering something with even shorter gearing because there will be some significant climbing involved.

As far as the shifting goes, I have a set of bar-end shifters just sitting around, so I think I should be covered there.

Thanks

I have on my C'dale CAD3 cross bike a 11-32 8 speed on a shimano 105 8/9 speed hub with a long cage Ultegra rear der. and Ultegra bar-end shifters. Works just fine.

Thanks for that.

I also just found this that answered the gearing question:

and this that answered the question on derailleurs:

Looks like the only thing iffy is I might have to go with a longer cage derailleur.

I have used an 11-32 on a Cross Check with stock Tiagra derailers and bar ends. Everything worked fine.

I use a short cage Ultegra on my mountain bike to shift across a 11-32 cassette. I only have 1 front chainring though.

The point is that with sufficient chain, the short cage can handle the 11-32 spread. If you have a large spread between your front chainrings though, a long cage derailleur can help take up some of the extra chain slack.

When I put an 11-32 cassette on my Kona Jake, the Tiagra derailleur hiccuped in the lowest gear, so I swapped on a long cage Deore that I had on a different bike that didn't need it. I could have gotten away with the Tiagra, but it wasn't smooth.

Try it. It might work.
