Northeast - Queens commuters

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Let's exchange information on how to make commuting easier. It would be relevant to say that Queens is not that bike friendly compare to Brooklyn for example.

I am riding 10 miles from Forest Hills to Manhattan using Williamsburgh bridge. It takes 45-50 minutes to get there.
Here is my usual ride:

And here is my commuter, which I built with "Parisien porteur" inspiration. Total weight without lock is a little under 30 pounds.

That's close to the same route I take to get to Manhattan, only I'm further east and I take Metropolitan from Jamaica Ave. How does the Williamsburg compare to the other bridges going into Manhattan? It doesn't seem too congested, only a few cyclists and joggers, but I guess that might change as the weather gets better.
I agree re: the WillyB and I am trying to get the QBB to incorporate the same path markings as the Willy B.
TA is working hard to improve things and there have been slow but steady changes as a result over the years....I sense that from here it will only get better, especially as more and more of us take to the streets on two wheels.
Every second Monday of the month TA's Queens Committee meets in Astoria to work on specific goals to improve riding and general quality of life in the area - the next meeting is this Monday at 6:30 - feel free to stop by and check it out. Greater Astoria Historical Society on Broadway.

velofred - that is a sweet ride. I have the same frame and need to convert to a lighter commuter.
If you guys are interested in making cycling safer and easier in Qns, there are some like minded individuals who get together on a monthly basis. The Queens Committee of Transportation Alternatives, a group of volunteer civilians, meets the second Monday of each month at the Greater Astoria Historical Society. Check them out on googlegroups:

velofred... there's a remarkably similar bike to yours locked up on York Ave today...
Sukram, if it was between 69th and 70th, it is mine, I was there on business today :)
Yessiree Bob, erm, velofred! I eyed your post the other day, and voila, today, saw what looked like something I could have sworn I saw on BF locked up where I lock up at work all the time. Nice ride! (I had to check it out). A bit unreal to see the bike there. I did a double take.
I keep fantasizing about the Kogswell bikes, the porteur-like ones, but it's NYC, and I lock up outside regularly, so I try to be realistic.
