I have an old 1963 Typhoon, and I am debating whether to paint or powder coat the frame. What would you guys recommend? I am looking for low cost and durability. All of the original parts will be cleaned but put back on, so there is still going to be some rust on the old parts. Therefore, not a whole lot of glamour on this bike but I would still like to have a good-looking frame.

Painting it yourself will be the cheapest way & can turn out pretty sharp but powder coat is more durable than anything you can do yourself

Powder coat is probably fine for an electroforged, welded, fillet-brazed, or internally lugged frame, so it should be fine for your Schwinn. However, I do not recommend it for vintage lugged frames because it will not follow the sharp contours of the lugwork.

Feh. If you're not doing a museum restoration (which, if you're even considering powder coating, you're not) then it's fine. You can always pinstripe the lugs if you want further definition.

Thanks guys! I ended up getting it painted for free with black auto paint from a guy who was painting a car, so he sprayed my frame and forks while he was at it.
