Road Cycling - Yet another "My first" thread. You have been warned.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Today I did my first Metric Century! 67.3 miles in 3hr 59min 23sec
The ride was from Ulm, MT to just past the area known as The Deerborne. I took a few photos to share and they will follow this message.
Looking west from about 10 miles into the ride. Between Ulm, MT and Cascade, MT. Things are abnormally green for this part of the state due to the above normal precipitation.
Here is my bike. It is a 1978 Raleigh Grand Prix 27" 10 speed lugged steel. I hope to buy a new bike over this winter off season. For now I ride Vintage Steel. :D
The photo was taken in Cascade, MT. at the "Joe's Trail" head. This trail is in memory of a Physical Therapist that lived in Cascade and was ran down while jogging on the road between Cascade and Ulm, MT. It is a nice tribute. The trail is not paved so I was on the road.
This is Tower Rock. This location is mentioned in the Journals of the Corps of Discovery as the entrance to the Rocky Mountains. It was just recently made a state park nearly 200 years after the Corps passed through the area.
Looking upstream from the area known as Hardy Creek. This is one of my favorite areas to go fly fishing!
This is the Hardy Creek bridge over the Missouri River. There aren't many bridges of this type in the state anymore. Was a fun decent and the climb back up was not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Fast forward to the second half of the journey. This one is coming back out of the mountains. Looking south accross the Missouri River valley.
Bob
Congrats on the ride!! thanks for sharing
West of Cascade, MT. heading east back onto the "flat lands."
"Square Butte" between Cascade and Ulm, MT. At this point I picked up a head wind for the last 13 miles or so of the ride.
Sorry there are not more bike photos, or any of me riding. I don't have anyone to ride with. I hope you enjoy seeing a bit of my world.

Wow, those are REAL beautiful photos! The scenery and composition itself, but also the quality! May I ask what camera has it been taken with?
Also, as I already know, Montanta is one terrific state to cycle in.
I had a great pleasure looking at this thread.

Beautiful pictures. The Missouri River in Montana is a lot less muddy than it is here in Missouri.

Great pictures. Everything else being equal, I plan on my own private metric century this Friday. There, I said it! I now will have to follow through - or pray for snow!
I also ride by myself, and have little way to take pics, except by asking strangers, which I do at times.
Good job - you did a metric century++.

Why not buy a < $20 tripod and use it with 10 seconds delay timer that most cameras have?
Bob

Thanks, John!

Thanks! I do feel lucky to be able to live here. The camera is a Sony FD Mavica Model MVC-FD100. The photos were taken at 1024x768 resolution. I then edited them in Photo Shop reduced the resolution, then saved them as the highest quaility JPEG I could while keeping the file size under 100k.
Beautiful pictures. The Missouri River in Montana is a lot less muddy than it is here in Missouri.
Really? Hmm. Well, We are less than 200 miles from the headwaters. I guess it just has not had a chance to get muddy yet.

Wow! Thanks Condor! 'tis a noble thing to help others! YOU ROCK! I do love living here. I get to travel thourgh that area quite often for work. It never gets old!

Thanks Denver! The only strangers I encountered were in the "Missouri River Inn" which is a tavern and eatery to purchase a bottle of water. I don't think they knew what to think of me in my HI-VIZ yellow jersey and lycra shorts. :D
I'll be looking for your Metric report this weekend.. ;)
Thanks to everyone for the comments so far. :)

Crazy! I did my first metric century today also, 68.28 miles ALSO on a steel bike built in 1978, a schwinn traveler. I didn't take any pictures, but the most of a the ride was along the mississippi (minneapolis) and quite scenic.

Nope, haven't any water cages or seat bag either. And 11cm of my seatpost are visible instead of your... zero? You got really short legs or do you pedals only clear the ground by an inch?

Beautiful pictures and beautiful scenery! I wish Cincinnati looked as nice as that.
Thumbs-up.

Yeah, the stand over height is to tall for me. The reach feels good, however. Even in the drops.
This is the lightest bike I have. My commuter is a 78 Raleigh Rampar and the stand over is good, but the top tube feels short to me. (compared to the Grand Prix).
I guess the fit of the Grand Prix is good enough until I can save up to buy a new bike. ;)

To be fair, you really need to post the pics taken in Febuary... ;)
Congrats on a milestone, long rides are very satisfying.

I always enjoy digital camera good mega-pixel quality JPG's...
Looking at those pictures, surely felt like changing gears for a moment (pardon
the pun!) ...
Although the panorama or perspective does seem isolated, claustrophobic
or desolate.
that's a fast century! congrats. i take it you didn't stop much..?

I stopped 3 times to eat a cliff bar and drink some water/sports drink mix for around 5 minutes each. Then there were the stops to take the photos.
Keep in mind, the time listed is rolling time from the bike computer which does not include the time spent stopped.

ah, cool. your first century looks absolutely amazing when compared with my first. i did my first couple months ago, in the fog at dawn with occasional rain, lol. i think it's all mental; it breaks down barriers and now i have no fear if i'm going to go 100km.. (though i'd rather do 75km lol)

Thanks! Photography used to be a hobby of mine. I never figured I actually got the hang of it. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

Yea, It is a lot mental. I think rain would have dampened my spirits a bit.. Contrats on your achievement too.

Heads up Bob, yesterday my rear axle broke, hopefully our parallels stopped a few days ago for your (and your bike's) sake.

Holy Mosses! I hope you were not hurt! I guess its time for a new wheel! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!
By the way, if I do have a mechanical failure on my bike, it will be all your fault! :D
I was practicing with the clipless shoes and pedals today. The wife took this shot. Don't laugh! :o

Holy cow that's awesome!
I assume you stopped taking pics cuz you headed up into the mountains and was too busy enjoying the ride?
I love those rides that start out flat and you watch the mountains grow in front of you before you start climbing.
Hey Opie,
Actually I was shooting at 1024x756 and ran out of memory space. I didn't have any extra memory sticks with me either.
That is the same route that I did my first FULL CENTURY June 12th. It gets far more spectacular!
