Thanks for posting! This is just made my day!
You probably won't get any play-by-play though. Just video and some background noise from the vehicles.
If they don't have English commentary, just head over to RAI and listen to the Eyetie's.

Fantastic news, thanks for the update. I was toying with the idea of calling my cable company to subscribe to RAI for three weeks.

There are different RAI channels for outside Italy. I'm not sure the North American one will show the Giro.

It has in 2007 and 2008. My DishNetwork guide still doesn't show the Giro as being televised this year on RAI though, except for the presentation tomorrow (12:00pm our time).
In past years they had Milano-San Remo too, but it wasn't shown this year either.

This will be cool as I have my computer hooked up to play on my plasma tv. Anyone else having trouble viewing the videos? I have downloaded and run all the appropriate items required by the universal sports website and still can't get any video to play. On screen I get audio but no video. When I download into real player I get both audio and video. I'm running Windows Vista 64 bit and Firefox.
edit - works fine on IE explorer. I'll watch it there.

If so I hope it's a different pair than the guys that commentated the Tour of the Basque, they were terrible.
Yes!
To those guys whose cable service don't carry, here it's available as a free OTR digital channel, all you need is an antenna and digital tuner.

Universal will broadcast the Giro live everyday online without commentary. Then it will broadcast each stage on its cable channel at noon EST with commentary from Todd Gogulski and Steve Schlanger. Scott Ogle will be on the ground for Universal in Italy. The TV coverage will then repeat from 9-11 p.m. and 11 p.m.-1 a.m. EST.

True - but I have watched the last four years on dishnetwork. Don't understand much Italian but it does sound cool. Great, (mostly) uninterrupted coverage. Still not sure what RAI is doing on the satellite this year as they don't show anything for Saturday (as mentioned above) and the Sunday on schedule is not yet up on thier website. If I remember correctly, their weekend coverage for broadcast to North America was minimal last year.
Edit
I did find this (google translation) for Giro coverage on RAI (RIA 1 covers North America)
CW
Raitala 1 on Sunday 10 May 2009 at 18.30 Italian time and from Monday 11 to Friday May 15 at 15:45 Italian time around; Raitala 2 on Sunday May 10 to 18:30 and from Monday 11 to Friday May 15 at 15:45 Italian time around, at Raitala 3 Asia Sunday May 10 to 18:30 and from Monday 11 to Friday May 15 at 15.30 Italian time around
i watched some italian coverage a few years ago...even if you don't understand much it's not like you can't follow the race...and you'd be surprised how much you know.
No one around here is picking it up...THPPP! Canal evasion showed it ONE YEAR...then decided they didn't have enough viewers. Since lance retired, everyone has dropped every bit of cycling coverage except the tour.

Here's (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/08052009/58/giro-d-italia-2009-giro-start-list.html) a startlist for the Italian-challenged among us so we can follow the leaders live.

There are no words to describe how bad DirecTV sucked, and how much better Cablevision io is in comparison. None.
And we do get Universal Sports on Cablevision, low def, but still. Part of basic service.
Not available in all cities over the air, but in most.
For those NYC'ers - Universal is available in NYC. I just have an antenna (and a digital tuner) - no cable - and I get Universal on channel 4-4.

I'm pissed about this because on Cycling.tv I can watch as much of the race as I want at anytime/anywhere. Now they can no longer show it, and I can't watch it on Universalsports.com while at work.

This blows. Cycling.tv coverage would have been so much better. The Universal web feed works about half the time and there is usually no commentary.
Hi,
I got the email last night. Just set up the DVR for the month of May -- channel 464 on Verizon FIOS.
I bought the CyclingTV coverage a few years ago. The only problem with it was that since there was no commentary you had to keep your eyes glued to the monitor so that you didn't miss anything. Even with bad, English speaking commentators, you can multi-task and not miss the important parts.
my cable co has RAI international and they are showing the giro...but i have to change my cable package. I've been thinking of it actually...it wouldn't be much more expensive.

Not on TV until Noon EDT. You can watch online: Link (http://www.universalsports.com/mediaPlayer/media.dbml?CLIP_ID=132808&_MODE_=EVENT&db_oem_id=23000)
About 50 minutes before the first team sets off (Columbia) so right now its a random mix of silent vid and various interviews.
