BMX - 24" wheels on a 20" frame?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
so, obviously i'd need to get a long front fork, but i *think* there's enough room in the rear dropout of my old mongoose frame to accommodate a 24" wheel... that is, if i really push things and mount the wheel as far back in the dropout as it'll go, with not a whole lot of room to spare within the chainstay bridges...
my question is - anyone done this? is it within the realm of possibility?
any reason NOT to do this? i.e. "hey guy, a 20" frame wasn't meant to withstand the forces of 24" wheels", etc.

no it won't happen without welding longer dropouts on or something ridicules like that.

I wouldn't try it. Even if it would work, the geometry would be so messed up you probably wouldn't be able to stand it.

it might fit (without a tire)
but i wouldnt do it

If you want a 24 inch with the feel of a 20 inch but a little bigger.
Try A Sunday Model-C
I have one and it rides like my 20 but bigger.
Here are some pictures

That looks like it has regular bars on it instead of cruiser bars.

I tried 5.5 inch cruiser bars ,No good for the steet and park.

Have done the reverse for laughs. I took the 20 inch wheels off my Staats race bike and put them on my cruiser for a lap around the track. As it lowers both the front and back of the bike by 2 inches it works fine.... sort of. The bottom bracket height gets really low so with 180mm cranks I had to watch where I pedalled and the brake posts are way too high so no brakes.
If you were able to do this in the opposite direction you would have the same problem with brakes as the brakes would not line up with the rim and the bottom bracket height would become very high for a BMX. A lot of 20 inch frames could accomodate a cruiser wheel in the rear but as you have realized, you will probably need a longer fork. This is going to raise the front end of the bike and make the head angle slacker (for example, if you were at 73 degrees you may end up at 69) so even with 20 inch wheels the bike will feel longer and turn slower. I believe the slacker angle puts additional stress on the head tube so the chance of cracking the head tube is going to go up.

I ride Aitkens, for everything. kenda tires just suck. Plus they don't have a high enough psi rating.

If memory serves me right, you should be able to pump tires up to double whatever the PSI rating is without issue.

I totally agree with you .I just took the Kenda's off and replaced them with the New 24x2.25 aitken's K-Lyte foldings,Pumped them up to 100psi and what a difference.
Those Aitkins totally smoke the kendas

I thought this was true, until i pumped a brand new holyroller up to 75 psi and the sidewall got 2 massive ripps in it. Maxxis tires suck.

I hate running a lot fo pressure in my tires. Like 80 PSI is pretty much as high as I'll go right now. But I also only weigh 130 lbs. so I guess that's ok.

Yea thats right ,They roll real fast
Now I realize I was wasting half my pedal power with the Kenda's
Will post the new pictures tomorrow

Definitely, now you can pump for speed so much easyer. And mini once you get to like 70 psi it doesnt really feel much different to just make them 100. but 80 is plenty.

If you play with tire, you will get road burned.
PS I get my MPH with 26x1.something Kendas on my Western Flyer but the rear wants to slip aboutl if you hit the coaster brake too hard...a little scary so you're probably right. BMX developed from cruisers and boredom you know.

I have my odyssey Evo on it now
I'll take 30.00 the revenge
minichamp31
05-10-09, 09:36 AM
Ah, that's such a good deal. If I wasn't investing in some new bars and then forks, I would definitely hit that up. Somebody better pick that up. But do you like the Evo better than the Revenge? I need new brakes eventually so this would be good to know.
MY26INCHCRUISER

I mounted the revenge on the bike ,Then took it off.Did not even hook the cable to it
I got the evo 2 so it would match the other Odyssey parts.

Oh okay. I'm going to pretty much do the same thing when I get new stuff. Like Ody Elementary, Ody Vermont, and the Ody Evo II brakes all in gold. I just hope that they carry the gold brakes by the time I get them because their limited edition.

I need a new cable soon because mine is split like in the middle. Hopefully when I get my new bars like next week, I'll get a new cable too.

I really want to get some new brakes now. I hate my Tektro's that are on my bike now. Especially compared to my Shimano DXRs on my race bike.
