"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Britches.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

For you lean, maybe tallish, US racers: what brands of britches fit you? I tried on a bunch at A discount dept store, and everything that fit in the waist was way too tight in the rump, guads, and calves. I then ordered some basic pleats cotton chinos from Land's End, and they have the same issues.
I have to wear pants or jeans at my new office, and my old stuff fits right, but the new cuts aren't made for bike racers. I'd like to buy off the shelf, but I may have to get 36s and alter the waist. My pant size is usually 32x34 if I can get them with enough rise. Otherwise, I have to go up to a 33x36.
I'll hit a Gap and EB this weekend, but I'm doubtful...

If I'm following correctly, your thighs are larger proportioned than a typical 32" waist. I have a similar issue but not exactly. Bills' Khaki M1 is cut fuller through the thigh and have a long rise. I have several pair and can't say enough good about them.
You would probably do well with the non pleated-version.

I, on the other hand, need as many pleats as I can get.
machine washable. hang after drying or light iron works well.

Figures. I'm thinking that way a bit. I like $39 pants better than $100 pants though ;)

Yeah, for ~$100, I can get full custom. Pleats all the way for me. No way any plain front will be as comfortable (I can wear Gap baggy fit jeans a size too big, but just barely). If you saw how tight these pleated Land's End pants are, it's just silly, and I even have some room in the waist.
I guess those Bills Khakis look pretty badass. The lightweight poplins might be the way to go here in Austin. Looks like the Assos of britches.
It's perplexing, because the Eddie Bauer shorts I've been buying for a decade are plenty full in the rump and thigh, even in a size 32. I have to wonder if they have a pant with the same cut.

if you wanna nice jean...you have to pay the price. Seven for All Mankind are my best pair. The ones pictured above are nice as well. Find a nordstroms rack...or an outlet store that sells high end jeans...i can get paper denims for $40..ahhh jeans.
Pleats? Please, no.
If you need a semi-custom fit for a large-thigh-thin-waist racer, see what 20 or $30 and a good tailor can do.
Though if you are fashion-forward enough, you could help spearhead the transition back to pleats, they are probably due for a comeback in the next 5 or so years.

I'll hit a Gap and EB this weekend, but I'm doubtful...
I have an oddly proportioned body, but being relatively lean, I can say that the Gap is not made for people who are in good/great shape.
I'd have to put on 20-30lbs in order to fill out a size small shirt from the Gap, and I'm wide of rib, for lack of a better phrase.

I haven't been able to wear plain front for 20 years. Jeans just barely. Plain front twills always feel like some disco pants on me.
When suggesting $140 jeans, remember that I race training tires, 32h wheels, don't own a TT bike, and I choose my phones based on what's free. I just don't like spending money that much.

Yeah, I have some old Gap jeans that fit me decently, but I'm screwed for shirts since I lost my last round of weight. I've been buying some knits that are more fitted, and it's working out. My old Gap basic mesh polos are pretty big on me now. (I worked at the Gap for a couple years, and their stuff was perfect for me back then... 1992). My last pair of jeans was from 1996 or so.
Man, I've been wearing "hiking shorts" daily for a loooooong time. (not really, that's just what EB had called them in the past)

Have you been over to San Marcos and the VF factory outlet store? You should find the biggest selection there.
I find the "relaxed fit" stuff works pretty well, but I'm only 5'10" (32" waist). I can't wear regular fit pants because of the massive guads..
Sometimes, I'll just go up a size and wear a belt.

I'm in the same boat as you but wear a 31 waist. The 30's fit inthe waist but are too tight on the guads.
Wow some of you pay a lot for clothing, I guess I am a cheap *******. If I gott pay more then $30 for any piece of clothing I get annoyed.
I am having trouble with dress shirts, even a 15 1/2 32-33 is too damn baggy and bunches up in the back, I can't stand that. My wife tells me to just put some weight back on.

Lucky Brand (sometimes, their 34"/long length is really long), BKE (found at The Buckle), Express (sometimes), Guess Jeans... all fit me pretty well.
Most of the cheaper are built for people with big waists and tiny legs and no butt. My waist is a 31, legs are 34 length, and my quads and butt have muscle, so if the cut isn't really good, the jeans just won't work.

Man, you wear shorts and race t-shirts to work for 15 years, and end up missing the whole fashion thing completely.
Bills is starting to look more attractive. I'm still hung up on the way jeans feel through the crotch. Maybe I can try on a really nice pair and see about the fit, but to get the comfort w/out pleats doesn't seem possible to me if I don't buy big and cinch it with a belt.
I'm still not down with $100+ jeans. There's no cost to a given cut. It's just paying for the texture, pocket stitching and maybe fabric/proprietary weaves. Same with khakis.
http://americanjeans.com/images/levis-men/levis-m-501-stf.jpg
I'm 33-34x36. No shop carries anything in stock for my length, so I hit jcrew.com when they put their stuff on sale. I will get a couple things not on sale a year, make sure the sizes/cuts agree with me, then take the full price things back to the store and wait for them to come back out on sale.
Levi's store/Sears is generally the only place that I have found that regularly stocks 34x36.
Levi's 511 are cut nice and easy to find for > $40 online. 510s are cool too if you are in to the whole girl jeans look that the kids were going for last week.

Oh, just thought of another possibility...Costco...just at the one up near Mopac and 183, although I believe you are closer to the one at/near William Cannon...I saw some decent "value" clothing options...I almost bought a t-shirt that said "My wife went to Costco and all she got me was this t-shirt." (I'm kidding about the latter.)
Also, don't rule out Macy's...you might be surprised at some of the deals you can get there...for example, last Fall (in Boston), I scooped up some Ralph Lauren jeans for $19.99 with an original price label claiming that the regular price was $170 or something ridiculous like that.

I've about given up on trying to find jeans in local stores. I don't think I've ever found anyone that stocks a 36L, let alone 32x36. I've had some success with Levi's 527 Low Bot Cut lately though. They're a little snug in the guad area after washing, but loosen up after a bit of wear.
Same goes with polo shirts. I can wear larges (6'3" @ 165lbs), but some just hang really loose. I prefer Medium-Tall, which rarely is available in stores. Usually I just order online and return if it doesn't fit right.

wash them in hot hot hot water, then dry them, then wear them. then wash them, then dry them, then wear them for a while.
once you've got them broken in, they're the bomb.
buying pants is always a project for me. although I'm short 5'7" and think ~147 lbs as opposed to long and lean. I've found that flat front khacki pants and dress slacks are better than the pleated ones (pleats are for golfers i.e. fatties). Best success i've found has been at eddie bauer for the khackis, and flat front dress slacks (I buy most at a clothing store called Joseph A Bank clothiers) work best for me.
Blue Jeans are an absolute crap shoot. Nothing at the discount stores ever fits, they seem to only stock for giants so I've given up.
the levi's I'm wearing say "569" on them, size 30/30. they're low cut in the waist which lets me show off my rock hard abs and roomy in the legs to accomodate my rippling quads. although I could pull them off without unbuttoning them if I didnt have a belt on.
botto - 501s fit me like tights. who wants to wash their pants 20x before you can wear them comfortably?

Ralph Lauren Mercer Low rise.
I found them at Sams Club of all places. Bought one pair, loved the way the fit, went back and cleaned them out.
Besides that, I've had lots of success with Levi's.
waterrockets, I believe we're similarly proportioned. Try Levi's 559 jeans. I had a pair that I loved so much I wore holes in them. They have a little more room than 501s.

My solution. I have trouble finding 32x36. There are lots of 36x32 available though.
No time for fashion here. If I wear something that looks bad, it ends up disappearing from my closet forever, usually replaced with something else by the lil clothing ferry that lives in my house.
I have the same exact problem. I am 6'3" 210 pounds with most of that weight on my legs. I finally found Levi 569's. They are not always easy to find but they are relativley cheap and they actually fit my legs.

The local Sears has Carhart jeans. Try those. They fit me much better than Levis, which tend to continue to shrink over time and squeeze the guads.
The cut and feel of EB's chinos tend to change over time, depending on their source, I think. The last pair were "wrinkle resistant" and said they were 100% cotton but felt kind of like polyester. Generally though, I can find something that fits both the waist and legs (pleated).

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but the only place that regularly has jeans that fit me is the local Pac Sun. They have more 28w x 30l jeans than I can shake a stick at. Lots of skinny skateboarders around, and they accommodate them quite well.

Relaxed fit Levi's. They fit like regular fit jeans on me and perhaps look a bit hokey, but at least they don't look painted on in the thigh region and they are comfortable.
I think this is more of a problem for sprinters/TT'ers than it is for climbers...
