I've upgraded many parts on my 05 Rockhopper, but havn't changed the cranks. I've been watching ebay, considering which cranks to buy when I picked up an older Trek MTB that just had a new set of Shimano Deore Hollowtech cranks installed. I know these aren't XT cranks, but are they enough of an upgrade that I should make the swap or is this basically an even swap and not worth the effort. BTW, both use a square taper BB. The Truvativ is 172.5mm and the Shimano is 170mm.
Opinions welcome.

Shimano Hollowtech (Hollowtech I) has an Octalink spindle (splined spindle), not square taper.

No, that's not correct.
Most Hollowtech cranks are Octalink, splined spindle, but NOT ALL Hollowtech cranks are splined. Shimano did manufacture some square taper Hollowtech cranks at the Deore level. I had already removed the bolt and was surprised (and disappointed) to find these are square taper. If they were splined I would not have posted because I know exactly which bike I would have transferred them to.

I wouldn't bother swapping the deore for the 5d. IMHO, the 5d would be a step down (i'm sure some ppl would disagree with this.). If the truvativs don't have a use for you on another, crankless bike, ebay them or give them to a friend in need. Save your money for a better crankset if the deore ever fails ya.

the five-d on my 06 rockhopper use a powerspline bottom bracket. just a heads up.

I'm not fond of the 5D Powerspline cranks I have...even if I tighten the bolts extremely tight, they still pull off the spindle with almost no effort. Bolts must be bottoming out or something.

If they're both square...weigh 'em, and use the lighter one?

Thanks for the good feedback. The 05 Rockhopper still had square taper. They didn't go to splined until 06, so I'm good there. I think the consensus is, change to the hollowtech. I'm going to use kramnnim's suggestion and weigh the two sets. The lighter set goes on the Rockhopper and the heavier set goes on the Trek. If it's a tie, I'm going to try the hollowtech on the Rockhopper.
