Northeast - Acadia and white Mountains

Did a search but came up with little.

Can we take road bikes to these places? What are the trails like? Never having cycled in the US, I have no idea what to expect but we are planning a 2 week trip there and are buying road bikes in the US too. So was wondering if we could just use those, or should we rent MTBs?

Acadia: You can ride road bikes on the local streets. There is some amazing scenery and sunrise on Cadillac Mtn. is a must. The carriage trails are covered in stone dust type material and are more suited for mtn. bikes. It's a beautiful place!
White mtns: There is plenty of road and mtn. biking to be had. The mountains are just that; mountains. Plenty of climbing and incredible views.

Where in the Wt. Mtns. are you going? I may be able to give you more pertinent information.

I've been to acaidia as been said the carriage roads are dirt but they are hard packed. road bike can travel on these but are not the best choice. the rest of the roads will be better with the road bike. there are plenty of places to rent a bike in town (Bar Harbor). White Mountains will depending on where your going. There are trail rides that will require a mountain bike lots of road riding in the mountains. most roads in the mountains have wide shoulders but are too hilly for my wide body.

There is wonderful biking in both locations.

Acadia-The mentioned carriage trails are a classic. The loop road through the National Park is accommodating of bicycles and so is the whole Mount Desert Island really. It is a blissful way to get around downtown Bar Harbor and see much of the island.

White Mountains-There are more and less challenging rides in these region. The Kancamangus Highway has steep grades and beautiful views. Wonderful side hikes and picnic spots along the way. Or travel through one of the notches for less climbing (still some to be sure) and still soak in the beautiful scenery.

You can rent Mtn bikes at Acadia. Have you trained for riding loaded bikes up mountains? Or did you mean to rent a car and day trip on the bikes?

The carriage trails were built from about 1913 - 1940, total about 45 miles and were funded by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his family. He wanted to be able to travel on motor-free byways via horse and carriage into the heart of Mount Desert Island. I've never ridden them, but I believe they are plenty wide and fairly flat.

I think you can ride the carrage trails at Arcadia with a 27" tire MY 7300 trek witch uses a smooth 28" tire will do anything for terain except hard core mtn bike trails/I have biked all the places you have mentioned and would prefer my 28" tires on the 7300 on any of the boney gravel trails of the northeast USA AND Atlantic Canada you will have a great trip im sure.:thumb:/Kenneth

I did the carriage trails with my nine year old son, there is some up and down which was difficult for a nine year old. They are beautiful.
