5 year old cycle, mass-produced, $200 off what it can be purchased for new-not including sale prices, clearance, etc which can drop a new 520 into the 800 dollar range... and new you can usually get better touring gearing swapped as a 'freebie'.... hmmmm?

Not trying to pee in your morning oats Netcelt but you may want to consider that asking price again.

Istanbul Tea, if you felt like you had to reply negatively why wouldn't you do it privately instead of ruining my post? You are obvously not interested in purchasing the bike. Retail price for a 520 is $1099. However, you may be correct about sale prices for the new 520s but I am also including a full set of fenders which cost $50. As stated in the ad, shipping is free, which would cost around $50. The bike will also be professionally dissassembled and boxed which costs around $30. All included. This brings the bike into the low $600 range. Not bad for a solid tourer handbuilt in the USA. As for getting freebies on upgrades, I have yet to visit a bike shop that would give me stuff for free. Especially after getting a bike for sale price. A used 520 just sold on Ebay for $1000. So, in the future, if you see a post that doesn't interest you, leave it alone. If you feel like you want to give some advice, do it privately. All the best.

I agree with this. After getting a great price on an 04 520 I had to pay full price for all the extras. Same deal with all the shops that offered the bike to me at a substancial discount.
I too will be selling a pre enjoyed low mileage 520. As for price it's what the market will bear. There is no central market for used bicycles to develope an acurate pricing mechanism. Who's to say what a bike is really worth? The best pricing strategy would be to set the price high and then negosiate. If the price is too high or the seller too inflexible the bike will sit. The price can always come down but can't go higher. The market will determine the final selling price.

I've gotten some free stuff, but it hasn't really been "free" since I've purchased all kinds of jerseys, maint. items, racks, tubes, tires, lights, helmets etc. etc. etc.

Every now and then the manager throws in some "free" stuff, but I think its just to keep me going to his store. I think if I bought another bike from him, he would definately do all the labor involved with changing out the stock parts, but I'd probably have to pay for the parts. Another person got a big discount on the parts since they could re-sell them, but still the exchange wasn't free.

After my first purchase ($450 MTB), there were no freebies, but I did get a year's worth of "tune ups" and 10% discounts. I had to pay for some adjustements after the initial sale.

My second purchase ($1000 for Trek 520) came with free (no cost for parts and labor) swap out of the crank (equal value switch), no charge for installing fenders, etc. And the tune ups were now for eternity and so was the 10% discount.

I just ordered a road bike ('04 Trek 1200) and they knocked $30 off the already below list price. A crank upgrade may cost up to $20, depending on what's available. I got free swaps on some equal value items, a $15 discount on a saddle upgrade, free labor on swaps and installation, etc. Plus some free cages and bottles. And all for a $720 bike.

The more I buy, the more they offer. Plus they charge me nothing to fix a lot of things I screwed up and give me priority on repairs and maintenance.

Well I may have been, and if Istanbul Tea had chosen to PM you instead of exercising his right to make a public comment on a public forum, I may have thought this was actually a good value. Thanks, Istanbul Tea.

P.S. Aren't for sale items required to have an off site link here? And isn't there a Buy-Sell-Trade Forum here?

Yes, but your initial post didn't make the bike sound like any kind of a deal at all, for all the reasons Istanbul listed.

Now that you've explained what all is involved, it sounds closer to a good deal. You really should have explained things more thoroughly in the first post. Istanbul helped clarify what was being offered.

Of course, ask whatever price you wish and see what happens.

I suggest you put it up for bid on ebay. That's really the best way to figure out how much it's worth. You might want to have the starting bid at around $400 to see what you get. You might get as much as $600-ish, but I doubt you'll get $750. I've seen brand new 520s on ebay and other on-line sources for about $700, so I doubt you'll get that much for a 1999 model, even with fenders and free shipping. Good luck.

Thank you for the positive help Alan. I was going to put it on Ebay tomorrow. I wonder if I should maybe settle for a lower price and let the buyer pay for shipping? I would take $600 and pass the costs for shipping to the buyer. Might look more attractive that way. It's a real beauty and I hate to see it go but I just bought a Trek Fuel mountain bike for trail riding so it has to go. I converted my old hardtail mountain bike to a tourer and I love it. Good strong cromoly frame and really comfortable. Thanks again :)

You make it sound like there is a limit to how many bikes you can have...thats Wrong man. Wrong :D

I guess the limiting factor is the amount of space in the garage. Although, I could put one in the living room :D LOL I already get enough flak from my wife as it is. I have a BikeE CT, GT mountain bike (converted to a tourer), brand new Trek Fuel, and of course the Trek 520. The first three bikes fill all of my needs and the 520 is just hanging around. It will make a happy tourer for someone.

Netcelt,

I use ebay quite a bit and in most cases the buyer pays for shipping. I think you're right, it probably would seem more attractive for around $600 + shipping. You can have the starting bid around $400, and have a reserve price of around $550, if you are comfortable.

Re. number of bikes, I'm very much a minimalist, so I only have one bike. It's a Trek XO cyclocross bike. The components are about 3 years old, and the frame is new because the fork broke a couple months ago, and trek replaced the entire frame and fork. I'm in the process of upgrading the sora components for light touring and general use. I'm replacing the stock rear deraullier with Deore LX and 11-32 cassette. I'm also considering replacing the front deraullier with a 105, but new crank sets are pretty pricy, and I'm not sure if it's worth it. The sora cranks work fine, they're just a little heavier than 105. I'm primarily concerned with reliability, and the cranks and fron deraullier typically last for several years.

As I type this in my den, I am staring at three of my 4 bikes, all hanging in the corner. The wife used to gripe about it, but has finally accepted it as the place to keep bikes.

As far as the 520 goes, lets not forget it is a 520!!!! According to some 520 owners I have talked to, they are faster than lance, can carry more than an 18 wheeler, and is more comfortable than a lazyboy! Rumor has it the government is buying them up and replacing hummers in Iraq with them because they take a rocket propelled granade much better!

I bought a 105 triple crankset this spring and I like it a lot. The price was quite reasonable for a light crank with the same Octalink bottom bracket as the high priced stuff.

But it did interest me and therefore I responded. I'm just not a big fan of the whole, "It's mine so it must be worth more than someone elses because after all I... " school of resale.

I ruined nothing in your post... and the fact that you think I did probably points to you feeling that you weren't offering that good of a deal to potential buyers in the first place.

FWIW, I would be interested if I didn't already have one, and I was a lot taller. If it really is in great condition, doesn't matter to me if it's 5 years old or not. You're still saving a $100-$200 bucks. I think it should be worth $750.

Would you be willing to take offers for a local pickup to save you the expense of shipping?

I'm in Alabama. I put the bike on Ebay this weekend so I will see how it does on there. I have had some offers to end the auction early and sell the bike directly but I'm not sure if it would be fair to the people who have bid on it. 4 days of bidding left.

Thanks for the input. I'm also looking at ultegra. On ebay, someone is selling a slightly used ultegra triple crankset w/ a 105 bottom bracket. It looks like the package will go for about $70, which is a great deal. Even new, I've found 105 triple cranks for $100, and ultegra for about $120, so it's probably worth it to spend the extra $20 and go with ultegra.

Netcelt,

It might be just a tad premature, but I have been following your auction and it looks like you are going to end up very close to what you were hoping!!!! Congrats!

I must admit that I underestimated the value of your bike. I suspect the demand of bikes (and parts) is pretty high right now. School is just about finished, so there are probably plenty of students (and teachers) looking to do some touring over the summer.

I am very happy with how it is doing. It seems it was a good value afterall and my original asking price was right on target. It is a good market out there right now for touring bikes with the summer coming on. Heck, even Istanbul_Tea decided to jump on the bandwagon and sell his own 520 on ebay. I hope it goes well for him. Now I've got to look around and see what else I no longer need. The Trek Fuel is almost paid for. :D
