Just that, similar to heat treating\ curing done for autos etc.
I used the cheapest aerosol paint, enamel. baked for 25 min at diff temp 120-250.
Stuff glassed (melted) really well.
I did a chairing, some brake component.

Hammered Alu finishes don't take as well.
But I didn't sand or do ANY prep.
I am not fond of chippy paints, but love custom color- this seems to cut it.

-I have not tried this on steel, and not with different brands of enamel.

As to how cheep a paint- 'COLOR ALL.' But is petroleum distilate.

Anyway- hammered @ the bashring (red now, by the above process) and its a good hard paint, chips only on the impact site- no surrounding flakes. Ready for mounting 30 min after first coat.

kitchen got a bit smelly, don't wreck stuff, like EXPERIMENT on old metal first, different paint brands.
Obviously Dupont Imron or whatever would be better, but that's not hardware store stuff.
