Thursday afternoon I was getting myself ready for the first commute of 2009 (I work second shift) when my sister shows up with my 81 year old mother. So mom takes one look at me and then states that I am "too skinny." Too Skinny?! I am 6' 1" and 176 lbs. What does she want? Does she want me to look like the pregnant men that I work with all of whom are one cupcake away from type 2 diabetes. I turn 51 at the month. I think I am doing well.

Go with the flow, man. I doubt you are going to be successful in changing your mother's opinion.

My mom used to do that. So one day I told her my BMI was 22 -- near the bottom of the health risk curve -- and asked if she thought it should be higher than that. She didn't know and hasn't brought it up since.
Don't worry, I still give her plenty of other things to nag me about. :D

Mom's always think their kids are too skinny. You could eat more and ride more. As long as you eat, they are happy.. Is she Jewish?
Hah.. my mom always carries a pic of me with her from when I was at my biggest. I cringe at it; she says "You looked great there!"
I think mothers are hard wired to feed anything that is smaller than king kong.

Momma knows best so what PIE are you going to have?
I'm 6'1", 163 and this is the heaviest I've ever been. LOL, my mother must be thrilled I'm outta the 150's. I'll be sure to ask her tomorrow.
Because it's mothers day. (In case anyone forgot)

I see my mom every day and she is very pleased that I have dropped 30 pounds or so biking. She says I look much better now. That said, she is still quite unable to stop preparing generous helpings of high calorie food, including P-I-E.

I think moms never stop wanting what's best for their kids - bless them all to pieces, but... their era's view of health may not fit into what we know (or think we know) these days. Humor her and love her and tell her your trying to build up with stronger, more healthy muscles by getting lots of exercise.

Thank god every day she is alive. Give her a big hug and kiss and tell her you are doing everything you can to take care of yourself and the let her know you'll be careful to eat enough (and then keep up your good habits).

I guess you just have to appreciate the fact that your mother's still kicking, eat that pie and then go on a long ride to burn it off.
My mom lost her battle with cigarettes a couple of decades ago. So enjoy her while she lasts.
My mother died from complications of MS at age 66. Given our family history, the disease probably robbed her of the last 1/3 of her life and greatly reduced the quality of the middle third. When I tried a strict Pritikin diet for several years, she was one of the few people who did not complain that I was too skinny.

I am 5'9" , 184 lbs. and my father-in-law, who is 95 told me a few weeks ago that I could stand to lose some weight, this is as I returned from a 24 mile ride. The sad thing is, he is right.

I've had the same comments made to me by family and friends who worry that I am too thin. I am 5'10", 165-170 pounds. People in the USA are just simply conditioned to seeing people that are grossly overweight.

Most of our parents ether lived through the depression or were raised by people who had recently experienced it. To them, 'skinny = poor and starving' is hard wired into their minds. She loves you and wants you to be healthy and prosperous. Humor her and then go back to what you know is best.

I waas at my mother's house a few hours ago and I had her log on and read all the comments you guys had on my post. She really got a big laugh over all of it. Then she told me to eat more!

78fujis10s, you should not feel like the Lone Ranger. I am 6'2" and 165 lbs. I get the "you're too skinny" from my mother andmy lovely and charming bride.
I was at my mother's house this weekend and got in a fairly good ride. She prepared a great supper, and I consumed multiple helpings of tasty home made fare. She was happy to see me eat like there was no tomorrow, and I was happy to eat great home cookin'.

Over this winter I have put on around 12lbs. 5'6" and 160 lbs- I feel fat but I am still going have a slice of pie tonight. I can diet tomorrow- or next week- or I can put more effort into the rides.

By now we are old enough and wise enough to know that we should have been listening to our parents all along. Not always doing what they say, but always listening. ;)

Do what I do, I always start off lecturing my parents about the need to exercise more. It gets them off diet REALLY fast. :D
