Ive been lurking here for a few days now and have really enjoyed this site. Lots of great info, even if most of it is way over my head.

Anyway, I want to get into biking so I figured I'd try to get some opinions on a few of them. Im a rookie and will be mostly commuting and on easy trails, at least to start.

Any thoughts about a 2008 Fuji Nevada 3.0($340) or 2009 Haro Flightline 1($330)?

Any bike under $400 really, as the wife has capped my spending there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As always, the specialized hardrock will be your best buy.
See if you can get an '08 somewhere.
It will run you much less than $400, and many feel has superior components. I like the '09s better though, based on the frame design and the fully butted tubes.

I do like the look of the hardrock, but I haven't ridden one. I have noticed quite a few people talking them up though, maybe Ill try to get on one in the next couple of days.

the regular hardrock retails for $390 for the 2009 model.

At that price range, most bike are going to be equipped with similar components. I don't see anything superior about the Specialized. In fact, the product manager that specified dark annodized rims on a bike with V brakes needs his head examined. It only takes a few muddy rides to wear through the anno and destroy the looks and functionality of the braking surface of the rim.

So I should spring for the disc brakes if I want the Hardrock?

The rims look really nice black, but I wondered if it would rub off. You say they dont work as well after the black is gone?

The annodized surface works ok initially but...

The anno dosen't wear off evenly, resulting in a wavy braking surface. Eventually, the bare aluminum is exposed and braking action improves. High end MTB rims designed for use with rim brakes are becoming rare, but notice they all have a machined braking surface.

Note the Haro you mentioned comes with machined rims.
