Just bought my first mountain bike. I'm a collegiate (and USCF) road racer looking to race MTB next season for my school. I wanted something that would be a nice light, XC race bike. I decided I wanted a HT, both to learn better technique, and for the climbing and weight. Price range was around $1k for a used bike.

This is what I bought:

Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper HT 2006 - Red.

The bike is in great mechanical condition and rides very well. Pedals are not included.

FRAME - M5 Aluminum - Red
FORK - Rock Shox Dart3 100mm (New)
HANDLEBARS - Easton EA-30 Aluminum
REAR DERAILLEUR - Shimano XTR (Rapid Rise)
FRONT DERAILLEUR - SRAM XGen
CRANKSET - XTR 2-Chainrings (no small Chainring) - has some foot rub..pls see photo
SHIFT LEVERS - SRAM Attack gripshift
LEVERS - Avid Speed Dial Ultimate
BRAKES - Avid Single Digit Ultimate
WHEELSET - Mavic CrossRide (disk compatible) - Brand NEW
WHEEL - Front: Michelin XCR Dry 2 (2.1) - Back: Michelin XCR Dry 2 (2.0) New
SADDLE - Specialized Toupe Ti 130
Seatpost/Headset - Thomson

I only paid $1050, including shipping. I'm thinking I did well. I don't know mountain bike prices, but I think this bike was pretty expensive just a few years ago (around $4-5k?).

What do you think?

Step 1: buy an item
Step 2: go online and seek approval for said item

Step 3 Get rid of the dart.

Well... it seems like a few of the key pieces have been downgraded. The most notable is the fork; the Dart III is a decent fork, but the lowest end decent fork (aside from Dart II and Dart I.) Really, I have no idea how you did. XTR is expensive stuff and the frame is probably very nice. You should post pics.

Yeah >_> they put a dart III on there? Wow. Er, cheap. Maybe they crashed it or just wanted to keep the nice fork.

Something fishy is going on with the brand new fork. Post some pics of you new ride.

I'll post some pics when I get it. Or should I have him take some more pics before I pay? Think it got wrecked badly or something?

For another $250 or so I can upgrade the shock to Manitou R-7 80 and the FD and triggers to SRAM X9. That's if I sell the take off parts. That should make it race ready, right? Or are there other things I missed.

Provided it's not wrecked, what do you think the frame is worth? I priced out the components (used) and think I could part them out for about $900. But I'm not sure what the frame is worth.

I'd say you got a fair deal, but it looks like a spare parts bike. That is, when someone upgrades to a new frame, they usually have many incompatable parts left over, and they fill the voids with cheap/old parts to sell it as a complete bike. This would explain the old and well used XTR cranks, the very nice (but obsolete) Avid Ultimate brakes, and the new, but low end fork. The seller probably kept his high end fork for his new ride.

I agree. Same with the Crossrides. Pulled a good set of wheels off and put a $125 set of wheels on.

That frame only came as a frame, it was built up by some one. So if for instance, it has a judy C on it, that what it has and it's OEM.
