Folding Bikes - Dahon Dream 16" wheel with shimano alfine

I bought fairly cheap Dahon Dream 16" wheel. Love riding the bike.

cut the original handlebar, put stem and new semi raised handlebar.

Not satisified with 6 speed shimano tourney, I replace it with IGH Shimano Alfine 8-speed.

Very-very happy with the bikes. I used it everyday to commute 30km.

Those look like some short spokes in the back wheel...

I have a similar settup on my Tikit :)
I really like the Alfine with the small wheels, it seems to accelerate really well, and the gear range is perfect for climbing as well as fast descents. Congratulations on your bike!

but if I were you, I'd also replace the brake and levers, and the crank and pedals as well.
love the leather saddle...

People should ride what they like. It doesn't matter how much the bike cost. If it makes them happy, who cares how much the thing cost or what "expensive" saddle or IGH they put on it. It's not "overkill" if it brings them joy and they get a lot of use out of it. :)

what is not overkill then ? to each his own. i really like his setup and as what kitn said - what ever makes you happy then do it. you're not here to satisfy somebody else's ego but yourself. bonex234 keep what you think is best for you and will make you happy.....

Thanks tedi, I will go that way but I have to slow down otherwise my wife would kill me for quickly spending a lot money on bike. :)
This weekend the crank will be replaced with Shimano Sora. I got good bargain price for used crank.

EXACTLY! If your bike makes you happy then ride it and have fun doing it. Put whatever parts and accessories that you want on it. It's yours. Enjoy it! :thumb:

My wife has the same bicycle (as it was originally). It is quite undergeared, although that suits us now because her commute is all uphill one way.

I have added a Thudbuster, which cost as much as the original bicycle. Partly for ass comfort, but partly because the original seatpost was too short.

If I had a reliable LBS, I would investigate a internal hub. The original derailer is only 2.5 cm or so from the ground. So it’s good to know that the Alfine would fit. Essentially, this would turn it into a cheapish Dahon “Curve D8”.

Plugging 32h Alfine into 28h 16" rim is very difficult job. I took to one LBS, they worked 1 full day for it and disappointing result like shown in the picture.
I then took to another LBS which very famous as wheel builder. The mechanic did it excellently in only 1 hour, but he admitted that I gave him difficult job. :)
Before purchasing Alfine for your Dream, please make sure your LBS can do this job.
I heard other people putting Shimano Capreo 9speed into Dahon Dream but I haven't seen it yet.
