Commuting - Rigid fork, how much should it cost?

I went down to local shop a while back and the guy there told me it would cost about $100 for a rigid fork and $40 for labor to install. I'm just curious, is that a fair rate? I see that I can pick up a surly instigator fork from jensonusa for $76. Should I also be able to find a lower rate for labor?

I'd shop used, that's a lot for a rigid fork.

The installation fee is too high. He should charge you a lot less. And if you buy the fork through him he should charge even less. The fork price might be a bit high but I don't know what you're looking for.

I had a headset installed and the fork cut and star fangled nut installed for $25. That's everything but slapping the stem on which is very easy. I considered that to be a fair price. Another shop quoted me $50 and I didn't consider that to be a fair price.

You're not asking for a headset press. But you are asking for the stem put back on and the brakes moved over. You might see if he'll simply cut the fork and install the star fangled nut for a better price. Or ask if he'll work with you since you're buying the fork through him...

Labor is inconsequential. Disassemble, transfer the crown race and reassemble.
