Built up my new Redline Conquest Pro last night with the help of one of our master mechanics. It looks sweet, rides pretty well. Not as nice as my tarmac pro, but better than my singlespeed. The transition from Shimano to SRAM wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, and I'm very satisfied with what I have. I took off the stock silver Hutchinson tires and put on Armadillo Elites for general training.

Well over a month of living off of ramen noodles, spaghetti and pbj sandwiches I finally paid off the bike today and it was worth every bit of financial suffering. What initially was just to be a transfer of parts off my Motobecane Fantom Cross, midway I decided to just keep the Motobecane the same and just get new parts for the Soma. I am so(ma) happy.

I just picked up this CycloCross bike yesterday from a guy in Orange County. I got a pretty good deal on it, and so far I'm satisfied with the purchase. I'm new to the bike scene, and I'm pretty sure you guys could tell me more about the bike than I could tell you.

No, she won't break the sound barrier, but she's works well enough for a non racer. Very fun off-road! And the in-line brake levers are great for commuting.

Posting for posterity - the best bikes on earth are cyclocross bikes, and here's my Flyte XLS-3 Frankenbike with a 6061 frame, Campagnolo Centaur gruppo, Campagnolo Scirocco wheels, FSA outer chainring, IRD triple-izer for a 46-36-26 gearing on the Campy Centaur compact crank... and Shimano brakes.

O/T: How do you like the Schwalbe road tires? The shop I'm racing for this season has good prices for Schwalbe stuff. I actually just picked up some 700c (and 26") Racing Ralphs that I'm looking forward to trying out... I've heard positive comparisons to the old Michelin Muds (the original green ones).
It's a nice set of tires. The previous set (Schwalbe Stelvio with specific "front" and "rear" labels) was totally worn out after a good 3000 km but they had excellent grip. The Schwalbe Ultremo tires are said to be better but I did not use them myself yet. The bike in the pictures has a Stelvio in front and a Vittoria Corsa KS in the rear. I think I prefer the Vittorias (clincher and tubular) over Schwalbes.

I just put a set of Veloflex Pavé tires on my bike for the Summer and I'm really liking them so far, but I only have a couple hundred km's on them.
Timo, great bike, where are you from?

Eff all those other road tires. Gatorskins for training, Michelin Pro races for everything else. At least if you want a race tire that'll last more than 500 mile son the rear (perhaps my mad skidz don't help).

I hate that I'll never own a bike as good looking as yours, Timo.
But you're making me that much more likely to go 1 x 9 this season. What bash guard are you using?
Hallo "MS",
I run two Spécialités TA Pro Tech Carbone bash guards with a 42t Spécialités TA Alyzé T chainring in the middle. Cranks are Storck Powerarms and the bottom bracket axle is a Spécialités TA Axix Pro Ti. Good old square tapper (JIS) but the combination of cranks, axle, chainring and guards comes in at 570 grams.
http://www.specialites-ta.com/produits/flasque/fcarbon_big.jpg
What do you think about my new chain guard? It's loud.
http://velospace.org/files/poprad2.jpg
that chain guard rocks, where did you get that from? i want one for my poprad!
http://www.bbgbashguard.com/
I don't use it any more, I just strategically bent my third-eye over to the outside for support without a guard.

i think i might take those wheel reflectors off this weekend...
I don't know why you are thinking of a 1x9 conversion with a chain guard when you still have reflectors.
my bike is still brand new and i haven't done much to it yet, just exploring the possibilities! I do to much hill climbing to make that conversion worth while at the moment, i just though it looked really cool on your bike and wanted to compliment it...
the only reason why i haven't taken the reflectors off yet is the fact that i've spent to much time riding to worry about them :-)
I use an XTR 11-34T cassette so I have a big range with a 44T front ring. Something to consider if you don't mind big jumps in between gears.
11-34t thats the mega-range cassette isnt it?

I'm ordering one of those straight-blade forks on Monday. Probably IRD branded, though. I love the looks of those.

You should consider the Tange at Universal Cycles, 60$ less than the IRD and really nice. I'm quite impressed actually.

It's going to be difficult having to wait until September to get out there and race this thing.
I'm pumped.
^^^ some very interesting bikes on this page.
here's my X01. now converted to single speed with an eno rear that i laced to a salsa delgado cross rim. it's damn fun and given that it was a fairly light bike with gears, it's an even lighter bike without them. here are some pics... a bit more beausage than others shown here; next time i'll get a rag to it beforehand.

Here's the ultra-cheap one I just (almost) finished last night. Wife bought the frame/fork with stem, flat bars, brakes and rear derailer for $2 (US) at a garage sale. Just had to use that stem with the pulley. Bontrager Race wheels came from a LeJeune that I bought built up as a single speed for $150 (I have since sold the frame/fork for $100 so $50 for the wheels isn't too bad). Titec Malone bars and Tektro levers from a previous build, barcons I've had forever. The Shimano RSX crank is 110 bcd made long before it was brought back for "compact" cranks, with 48/34 rings. Seatpost soon to be replaced and the saddle and BMX paddles come from the afore-mentioned LeJeune. Yes, the front Stradle cable seems excessively long but it works well so far. I'll get some miles on it and go from there.
