Haven't raced with them... I don't race. The cross bike is my 'all arounder' for fun when I don't feel like getting lycra'd up or doing full MTB trail riding.
I can say they're good on single track. SoCal has very hard pack ground with dusty ball-bearings sprinkled on top, with ruts and rocks thrown in too. These tires handle that well, and have good grip for muscling up steep climbs. They're not great for fast turns on pavement... I've had a few close calls where they broke loose; I think it's the slight gap between the knobs in the center and the outside.
I also ride with Vittoria Cross EVO XN clinchers, and in comparison these are harder, a bit less supple, and better on technical climbs. The Vittorias corner fast better and have ridiculous grip on grass and softer ground. The Vittorias are overall better, but you definitely pay for the difference.

+1.
The EC90X is supposedly a fantastic fork, and a pretty remarkable part on a bike of that price point. I've been looking for a white aftermarket EC90X myself, but it appears Raleigh owners hold on to theirs.

best bike for the money, just get ready to change the wheels as soon as you get it.
Truvaine, what brand is your stand?
My Czech-Japanese-French-Italian and who knows what else co-production.
Build from leftovers and spare parts.
Picture shows an early version.
I changed the brakes (Pedersen Canti,now Campa mini-V) after some quite exciting descents.
The frame is a czech Fort alloy,rather heavy but quite reliable.
Shimano 9spd mixture (105 shifters,DA front derailleur,Ultegra rear derailleur)
Sram 9speed cassette 12-25
1" Montano carbon fork with alloy shaft
Ritchey cockpit, Roox seatpost
Wolber rims,DA hubs

what brand is your stand?
its a Spin Doctor, got it on clearance from performance i think. works pretty well; dont really like that the thing tightens on the downtube. only complaint is sometimes when you really crank on it, the BB slips in the shell on the stand and you have to readjust the bike.

Here's mine. I don't race anymore. My racing days are behind me, but for me a cross bike is the perfect everything machine. I will probably never buy a roadbike again. Only cross machines for me. Stock except for the seat, pedals and wheels and stem and chainrings. Don't be jealous. Drooling allowed.

Thanks Scott,
Yes those are the Avid BB-7 Calipers and i am running it as a single speed rig.
Yeah, i know, disc brakes on a SS is pretty much OTT, but I really wanted disc brakes, plus I was also settled on having a Single Speed rig. So, from that, I ended up with this rig.
Also to add, I am enjoying the stopping power of these brakes.. plus additional weight was only a pound plus change!

No problem Velo. I am looking at getting a cross bike as a road and multi-use training bike instead of riding one of my mountain bikes. I really like the way you have that setup but would not go with a single speed. I hope you enjoy the heck out of it.

Zaskar: cross bikes are great for that sort of thing. If you don't want one for racing only there are lots of options out there with braze-ons / eyelets for racks/fenders/etc, so they make great all-weather training, light touring and commuting bikes.

here's my do-it-all:
Salsa La Cruz 2008
Surly SS 48t single chainring (the wonky chainline isn't really an issue for my riding—low abuse, no racing)
Ultegra 9-speed brifters
Deore XT SGS RD with Sram 11-34 cassette
i adjusted the fender line after this picture by adding a cork spacer to the lower rear stay attachment; i still think i'll go with some nice VO fenders i the future. i bent the SKS fender stays to accommodate the disc brakes, but the VO fenders would obviate this hack. i also added a good-enough-for-commuting Axiom rack—works great. this bike is is easily the most fun lovin' bike i've ever had.

I cant tell if you are serious or not but those white ec90 forks come standard on these bikes. The blue version even has the white fork. I am probably wrong but I think at least at the time you couldnt get a white ec90 fork anywhere else.

I just finished this build incarnation, and man, is that stem too long. I put on a shorter one after I took this picture.
My only issue with the bike is that the head tube is so short--I need that mondo stack of spacers to get the bars where I want them. Well, also the powdercoat on these old Gunnars was pretty poor, but now I just enjoy it's battered, lived in look.

That's a great looking bike, but the reason you need such a high stack is that the bike was made for someone with much shorter legs than you have, judging by the height of your saddle.

It's a 60cm frame, the biggest they made back then. I'm 6'3", 36" PBH, not huge, but yeah, I agree, the tall seat and bars make it look too small.
Ironically, I bought it used from a cross racer who was selling it because it was too small. That was back about 2000 or so. Now, I would have trouble giving it up. Although I do like the tall head tubes on those Somas. I wish I could combine that with the dropouts and tire clearance of a Surly, that would give me a perfect bike.

Top Tube = 56.5 C-C
Seat Tube = 56 C-C
Main triangle is double butted 3.25 Ti
All Shimano components - 9 Speed Dura Ace
Fork = Easton CX cnt fork
Wheels = Neuvation Aero
Saddle = Flite
Handle bar = Reynolds Race 31.8mm
Stem = Syncros
Headset = IRD Technoglide (King knock off :))
Brakes = Shimano BR550 Canti's
Seatpost = Dura Ace Easton
As is the bike weight is right at 18.5ibs.
It rides really well and the rear is stiff with over-sized chain (1 inch diameter ) and seat stays. Has a chainstay bridge in front of the rear wheel. This bike is really smooth and stiff. Love it.!!! :):thumb:
Am looking at replacing the brakes with Pauls Neo-retro Canti's and switching the wheels to Tubulars. Will update this post later after doing so.

I have the same bike in the same color, pretty sure it's the same year ('99?). I'm on the 50cm and the head tube is way too short for me, too, so I've got the mondo stack going. It drives me crazy. I'm thinking about selling the frame and swapping the parts onto something else.

Somas at the same top tube length have a 1.2cm shorter head tube (edit: compared to a Crosshairs). If you get the biggest Soma, the top tube is 2cm longer, which means a shorter stem, which means probably the same amount of risers to get the bars up to the height you have now.
Gunnars for the same effective size (i.e. the more reliable top tube length) actually have taller head tubes. You just like really high bars, which will mean lots of stack on pretty much any non-custom frame.
Not stalking you, I only know this because I practically CADed out each frame before I bought my Gunnar. :)

The new Gunnars have taller head tubes: the current 60cm frame has a 187mm head tube length, vs. my old one at 160mm. That's almost three (of my five) 10mm spacers removed right there. I wish Surly would pick up on this and extend the head tube on the Cross Check.
I've run my potential frames on CAD too:lol:
