Nothing, the chain is shorter than normal, and had a chain guard and a third eye.

Velocipedio,
Think you can manage to find a 2nd car as well? It was kinda cramped in the Civic with 4 riders, bikes, & gear. No big deal to me as I am up for it but the guys in the back seat...
well, for what it's worth, the sponsor thing is going well. well enough, in fact, that we'll probably be able to afford to rent a van for some of the races. for the ones closer to home -- sherbrooke and mirabel -- we'll probably be able to use the shop van. and there will be at least two other cars. so we're looking good. i would be delighted to have you along for the ride, andre. i'll have to check to see if i can get you into our colours -- i might be the team manager, but i'm at the mercy of the title sponsor when it comes to the OFFICIAL roster and giving away team kit -- but you are certainly invited to join us unofficially and, as always, train with us. in fact, i would insist on it. you have a love of the mud and that, in the end, is all that matters. besides, in last year's races, you suffered almost as much as i did! ;)

Heck! I'm not in it for the team kit. They don't look too warm, IMO, much prefer my jacket. Honestly, I can't imagine someone wanting to sponsor a last place rider anyways. Speaking of which, who is the sponsor? The bike shop? I just want to participate, try my best, & enjoy the comeraderie. Besides, the 3 Quebec City area races seem a little far for me to drive back & forth on the same day. I am waiting to see what OBC is up to & will attend the 200km range drives.
I am hoping all the summer duathlon stuff/suffering will pay off during the CX season. I am hoping that I will do better. Not last, is a start! I am not sure about who suffered more but I suspect that I suffered the most given my 1st time & season last year.

I gotta find a hill around hill & start hill sprinting or something soon.
Bring it on!!!
:)

Thanks!

Do you guys find your HR monitor really useful? Im debating whether to just get a normal computer or a HR monitor with odo and speedo?

Timo
09-09-04, 03:49 AM
I used a computer with odo, speedo, max, average, etc. for more than ten years but decided that I don't want to be a "slave to the average speed" like I was. I used to hate it when the average speed dropped below 30 km/h when doing solo rides.

Since a year or so I only use HR monitor (Polar). For health reasons - it's an ideal help in my attempt to loose weight :)

Thats a sweet looking bike, whats it weight in at?

BlastRadius
09-13-04, 06:10 PM
Using a bathroom scale, about 20.2#. The saddle is fairly heavy and the wheels aren't the lightest but they're sturdy. Let's hope the Scandium frame is more durable than people make it out to be. I figure if the Cross Concept is Scandium... plus I'm only 130# and pretty nimble on my bike.

Thanks all, I can't wait to race it.

Many of the parts on this bike I had collected in my spare parts box, including the DA BB. I debated buying a complete Conquest Pro but this brand new Team frame came up on Craigslist for $350 (the best part about buying the frame is I bought it from an Elite Woman CX racer so I met her in person). The only other parts I needed where a headset ($20 used S6/Craigslist), Time ATAC pedals ($45 used on Craigslist), brake pads ($20 new from LBS), and shifters ($100 near new on Craigslist).

In the end, if you add the parts in from the parts box, it probably cost more and the Conquest Pro but at least this bike is one of a kind (and I got to meet and chat with a couple of elite cx racers to boot).

On another note, Craigslist is awesome. You sometimes meet some great people and you sometimes get great deals... e.g. for $150 I got a set of Dura-Ace 7700 cranks and BB (the cranks are on the road bike) and for $135 I got 105 cranks, BB, FD, and RD.

Now do I sell the Axis or the full-suspension MTB that I rarely ride?

Redline Conquest--I think it's a 2002, but I'm not sure. If anybody knows, do tell.

The frame, fork, stem, headset, and cranks are stock. Bought off e-bay. Everything else is new and after looking at what the original component list included (Sora, etc.), definitely an upgrade. We will see how she holds up in a race at the end of the month.

some_dude

Yes, it was a triple set of 16" barricades. It really is not that hard, just carry some speed into a barricade and hope that you get up high enough because to not would be very very ugly when you are going that fast.

My cross' bike is an old reliegh mtb that I put an extra wide BB on, to acomidate striaght cranks and a single chainring(currently a 42 tooth)I still have a casset in back, but hope to turn single speed soon.A straighter fork was put on,and narow tires.I hope to go to drops, and maybe 700c's with it by the end of the season. It weights maybe 25 pounds, proof a mtb bike can be cheap and light and reasonably effective for cross.investment so far:about 150 bucks!

It's a little bit heavier that i thought it would be but i'm very satisfied with how it handle. It deliver a very smooth ride an are very stable in the mud.

I'm gonna change seatpost and saddle and will shave 0,4 kg, the original saddle is horrible for me, to wide at the wrong place. I also gonna change to triple chainrings tho i wanna ride at singletracks.

A question: Can i fit a MTB-crank for instance a XT if i exchange the crankshaft (is that the right word?) and the front derilliair (spelling???)

Sorry for my bad english, i'm swedish...

jfmckenna,

Yes, I did make the bashgard myself. Sorry to answer so late.

I make them at work out of 11g aluminum sheet. First I spray it with layout fluid and scribe the circles I want with a compass. The outer circle I rough cut with a bandsaw and then smooth it out with a high-speed vertical sander. The inner circle for the crank spider I punch out with a hydralic hole punch designed for electrical cabinets and I use a small lever punch for the chainring bolts. Of course there is alot of final filing to do to get everything to line up and fit. The paint is just a can job but the primer is Zissner "Stain-Killer" (applied with a gun) so it won't chip off. The result is not perfect but looks halfway decent. There is a Third Eye Chain Watcher on the other side of the crank that I painted white.

Ideally I could get the thing all machined in a fraction of the time but I'm afraid that would raise too many eyebrows, especially from a few of the nosy busybodies that work there!
