The mountings for the shift levers clamp under your brake levers. I've used them for a couple of years on my tandem, so I can attest to how well they work. Kelly provides the mounts - you supply the shift levers and brake levers. I use Bar ends, but braze on type downtube shifters also work.

Bianchi reparto corse with a mix of ultegra,DA, and Ritchey. It rides great on road or single track.

- just came back from a 20-mile maiden voyage - somehow the bike was set up perfectly right from the shop with no fitting and no input from me at all! i guess the wrenches there are prescient?

- i'm a happy camper!

Cannondale Cyclocross RX800

The Good: Light and fast, and extremely versatile; I've gone camping by putting a rack, panniers, a tent and sleeping bag on the back. Wheels are rock solid.

The Bad: It was a MUCH softer ride when I rode with Spinergy SPOX, but was too concerned about wheel failure.

The Ugly: Nothing . . . I love it! Seriously though, the brakes have no stopping power. Radius brakes suck.

What do you think of the tires? I have Kenda Kwick 700x30 and haven't had problems so far (2 months) but I've read some bad reviews.

If you are still trying to convert you mtb to a cyclocross bike:
1st: If you just want downturned handle bars any bike shop can do that. You just need to buy a new handle bar and new shifters and pay for the labor.

2nd: I you want to convert your wheels to 700c then you have to buy new wheels, find long brake arms (your current mtb brake arms won't work), as well as convert the handle bar and shifters

Not so bad in my experience. I've only raced on them once. I originally bought them for bike polo, and they seemed to work great for that. I'd also use them for winter commuting and i didn't have many problems.

With that said, they're a bit worn, and I'll probably be switching to something else when I replace them. I'm not sure what, though.

i've been doing a ton of single track with it and would like to give 'cross racing a try. it's pretty dialed in, but i really want to try a fork mounted cable hanger because i'm getting a ton of fork vibration desipite all my toe tweaking... i'd also like to ditch the 12-23 cassette i have for perhaps a 25 or 27... blah blah blah

56cm Soma Doublecross, British racing green.
Ultegra 9-sp drivetrain, Dura-Ace bar-end shifters, Truvativ Elita cross cranks, Paul touring cantis and cross levers, WTB grease-guard headset, Salsa cages skewers (its all about the details) and moto-ace Bell Lap bars, Oval stem and post, Brooks B17, SKS fenders, C-dale hubs laced to Mavic CXP-21 rims, Ritchey tires.

I built it for riding paths and trails and doing light touring, haven't put a mile on it yet, but can't wait. I'm really excited to have a cross bike, it seems like it opened up a new realm of possibilities for my riding.

Got'r done. My first genuine cross bike and a total mutant it is.

Frame is a battle-scarred Redline Conquest retired after helping its previous owner win some championships. Wheels are ancient but barely used 8s Dura-Ace hubs laced to equally old Matrix rims. They're a bit heavy but feel rugged and will do until I lace some sew-up rims on there. I've got Ritchey Speedmax 32s now.

The crank is a single ring D/A with rings homebrewed by the previous owner. Shifters are Mirage 9s Ergo and the rear der is a 105 with the cable hubbubed. Brakes are NOS Suntour XC pros my newly favorite LBS came up with. Bars are Salsa Bell lap and everything is out of some junk box or another except the Specialized BG saddle that came off my main bike because this is now my main bike.

Took it out twice now, mostly off-road single and double track, this is the most confidence I've ever felt on a new bike. It does everything right except for a bit of fork shudder on pavement that I think will go away with some brake adjustment or break in.

It ain't pretty but damn she's fast.

thanks! i believe the tires are 32c... i love them. they are fast on the pavement and hardpack, but corner great in looser stuff. i've been doing a lot of single track with this bike and found the tires hookup well even in fairly loose terrain. sometimes i'm breaking traction on steep climbs, but i associate it with my gearing (48/38 with a 12-23 cassette) more than a tire issue. overall, i think they make a great tire.

I really like that Douglas, especially the color.

well, toe in helped it a quite a bit, but the chatter still there under hard braking. thus far, i've compromised more squeel for less chatter. this weekend i just picked up some koolstop non-cartridge pads for the front so we'll see how that goes. also, i'm no pro mechanic, but i keep all of my bikes running decently well... my road bike and mountain bike brakes are setup ok and function properly... put me in front of some canti's and i start crying like a little girl. they seem so simple, but are so complicated!

I have only been on the road with it so far so I don't know yet what it's like off road. I have a race in a week and a half so I am going out this weekend to mess around with it. My new, 2005 Crosscheck Complete. I swapped out the end shifters for some STI Flightdecks, added Radius inline brake levers and some basic clipless pedals. Bike weighed in at just under 25lbs. I think this might be the coolest bike I've ever seen. :D

It was really a crap shoot when I was searching for a quality steel frame, but I got lucky as it seems Chris Kelly knows a thing or two about building bikes. The bike rides so well I thought the tires were low, even though I had checked them just minutes earlier. I don't know how he did it, but the feel of the bike is truly unique, as if there really was a suspension hidden in there somewhere. Cracks and sharp edges pass by with a muted thump reminiscent of a BMW with new shocks, the same imperfections that knock my hands off the bars on my steel frame no-suspension mtb with fatty slicks.

Yet when I put the power down, the bike responds well and has handling to match. Truly amazing, and perfect for the 'city beater' role the bike will play. I'm no expert, but production frames I've ridden can't even come close the experience this bike offers.
