That bike is awesome! A disc rear would be cool...

Hey, Thanks for the nice comments. The CX experiment is fun and the bike is really starting to grow on me. I'm discovering a lot of things about building/riding CX. I don't think I will put ona rear disk because this would require a disk compatable rear hub and welding of disk tabs to the frame. However, thanks for the suggestion. If I discover that I CX quite a bit, I will buy a dedicated CX bike with disk brakes.

Any suggestions?

Oh, a disc brake. I thought you meant a disc wheel. Now THAT would be cool.

Is that a custom paint job?

Yeah, the only way I could find a frame in my size (49) without waiting for next year's bikes was to find a shop in another state that happened to have a team frame that didn't get built up. It's a sweet paintjob, I think. I raced my first race ever today. Got my *ss kicked, and I'll have to see how I feel about cross in a couple of days, but I'm pretty sure I'm hooked. I don't think I like the Eggbeaters; I think I may put something on with some platform. Otherwise, I was very happy with the bike.

yeah i like the paint also.

Try the candys if you want more platform, then you wouldnt have to swap cleats.

Hey Steelforme, is that carbon fork stock on your bike? I think I have one just like it, but your headset seems to be integrated. Can you tell more about the source of the bike, and parts?

Well, here's my nearly completed cross project. I picked up the frame for a really good price, moved some parts off my oldish road bike, bought a new fork and some tires, etc. Like all bike projects, it wasn't as cheap to put together as I imagined. Nonetheless, I think it looks allright and it's pretty light and stiff. I don't have a scale, so I don't know the weight. I'm still playing with the the tilt of the bars, I need a fang or 3rd eye for the chain, and I'm thinking about painting something on it. My first cross race is in a few weeks. I have no offroad handling abilities. Wish me luck.

Frame - Redline Conquest (pro?)
Fork - Generic Carbon, It's quite light, has an aluminum crown and seems stiff
Wheels - Mavic Reflex, 105 fr, Ultegra Rr, Conti Twisters (These were my first wheel build about 8 yrs ago)
D-Train - Shimano 600 Crank, 39t FSA Ring, Ultegra 9spd DR,11-23 Cassette, 42t ring used for chain retention.
Pedals - Time ATAC
Cockpit - Cinelli Eubios, Thomson 100mm, Ultegra 9spd STI, Salsa cross lever

I'm not sure about the straight bar either, but they were laying around and getting no use. They work ok for city slicking. :)

I should probably post this in the dumb questions thread but here I go:

Is a cyclcross essentially a road bike with "nobby" tires? what components would I need to change in order to turn my existing road bike into a cyclecross?

Thanks,

Cynikal

Usually, a CX bike has a more relaxed geometry with more clearance for larger tires. Similar to a touring bike. Also, the frames and fork have canti mounts for better braking and clearance.

Thanks,

If you can fit some nobby tires, within the confines of your fork, rear stays, and with the brakes on your bike, then go for it. Tall skinny tires in the dirt is a lot of fun if you cyclocross race or just ride. :D

I'm not trying to troll -- I'm just a nub -- but aren't 16 spoke wheels a bad idea for cx? I thought the point was to build something bombproof.

Plus, if I should have a problem, I've got backup wheels.

Not sure about the reflectors, the coppers here in sweden are really strict about cycling safety and such...
But I think I will remove them, they're butt ugly!

Trust me on this, they ARE very green! Wear your sunglasses during first viewing. ;) The carbon fork is a nice upgrade from previous Snakes, the 10sp is debatable, the fact that they are now using DT spokes is a HUGE plus. I've become adept at replacing the garbage spokes on my 05 Snake, the damn heads just pop right off the things!

I'm looking to get into cyclocross, and i have a question for you riders. I have a old alu giant ocr (which i dont road ride anymore) and if i threw a pair of knobby tires onto it would it be alright as a cross bike? I dont really want to go out and drop money on a new bike esp when trying a new sport out. Any help would be appreciated

I just finished setting this thing up. Bars and Stem are there until I determine the best set-up. This bike is great so far and the Force shifters are very nice. Still need some help setting up the front, but, the rear is perfect and very nice to use on rough terrain. Fulcrum Racing 1 wheels with Tufo tubulars.
