Tandem Cycling - best way to transport grandkids

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The trailers are good from about 6 months to about age 4.

Tag-along is more a matter of the kid's size than age. But then that's true of trailers as well - once they out-grow them, either due to weight or height, it's time to move on, whether they are 3 or 5 years old. Tag-alongs are best with some amount of gearing - which means they are better once the kid is able to figure out how to use gears. Otherwise you wind up spending a small fraction of the time in a range where the cadence is doable. Our kids wound up coasting a lot on the single-speed tag-along, since at low speeds they couldn't do anything and at high speeds they couldn't pedal fast enough to contribute, and that combination was demotivating.

You may wish to check Craigslist for trailers or trail-a-bikes. We use both. To ride on a tandem, the child needs to be physically large enough to fit. The child stoker kits are available but are expensive (we use one of these as well). I do not use child seats, as they are, in my opinion, apt to trap a small child and fall from a tall height if the bike is tipped over. The trailers are the best protection for this. A trail-a-bike is about the same height as a childs bike, and a tandem kid stoker kit is of course the highest, and only for older children (in my opinion). I have all of us wear helmets, even those in the trailer.
Have fun with those grandkids.

Here's what I did with my 6 yr old grandson. The rear is 18" with 170mm cranks so his legs are about 2" short. Didn't want to spend a lot of $ on a kid stoker kit. Child has to be old enough to ride a bike and know enough to hold on and not fall asleep!
Used 2 U bolts, wing nuts, and some plastic tubing to protect the frame. Costs about $8. :thumb:

I use both a trailer and a child seat for hauling my grandkids around, depending on which bike I'm using and how many of them I take at a time. I have 3 ages 3 to 5, and I can haul all 3 at once with 2 in the trailer and one on the seat.
Here, my son and I take his daughter for a ride. She would not let go of that pink teddy bear.
