Road Cycling - Can anyone share their experience with putting a rack on their full carbon bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was wondering if anyone could share their experience with putting a rack on their full carbon road bike.

Last Tuesday I was heading over to a friends place but it was raining off and on and about 60 degrees so I put on all my rain gear - jacket, hood, pants, shoe covers. Once I got going the rain subsided to occasional drizzle. I would have taken off the pants and hood but I couldn't because I didn't have anywhere to put them, so I started to overheat (already had the pit vents open, etc etc on the jacket). I must have made a poor judgment call, because I went to go from the street to the path at the end of someone's driveway and one second I was fine, the next I was down, sideways, and my right arm was bleeding all over the place. I don't think this would have happened if I wasn't overheating and not thinking clearly, and I'm just tired of this bull!@!@ about not being to carry simple important ride items with me on my ride like a rain jacket.

So I'm hoping I could hear from people who have put a rack on their full carbon bike. The two options I'm considering at this moment are the Tubus Fly rack (with adapters) that mounts through the wheel skewers at the bottom and under the rear brake bridge at the top.

The other option I'm considering is put a Tubus Disco rack on (comes with wheel skewer mounts installed) and mount it using one of those seat clamp replacement thingies:

I'm a little concerned with the Fly about mounting a rack onto a carbon fiber brake bridge, about being able to put a trunk bag on the top of the rack securely (don't expect to use panniers), and a friend of mine had a rack with a similar mount and said the rack would sway side to side when it was loaded. However, it is the lightest, least visible, and specifically designed for a bike without rack mounts.

The Disco is heavier, bigger, and a little less svelte looking being mounted (particularly with those struts running from the rack to the seatpost adapter). However, I wouldn't have any worries about getting a trunk bag onto it, or issues with attaching to the carbon fiber brake bridge, or concerns about it rocking side to side because of one mounting point.

So if you have experience, could you please post about your experience? Thanks!

P.S. If you have a response other than "I tried it and here's how it went", I would really appreciate it if you could post it in another thread. I'd like to hear about other people's experiences and what they've used. There's been plenty of discussion elsewhere about how you should buy a 2nd bike if you think you'll ever want to carry anything, or that you can't understand why anyone would want to put a rack on a full carbon bike, or using a seatpost clamp rack or a giant saddle bag, etc etc, but after trying several other solutions I'd just like to hear from people who have tried the rack option. Thanks.

Maybe your clothing is part of the problem too.

Sorry for the rack question, never tried it.

get a rack that clamps on to the seatpost, they can haul around 5~8kg no problem.

I've mounted racks on a couple of different bikes that had no rack mounts, using the rubber lined clamps around the seatstays. They were sturdy enough to carry a trunk bag easily. I also have one of the seatpost quick-clamp racks, and it's fine for a trunk. I'd steer away from using it on a carbon seatpost, but I use it on my alloy ones, no problem.

Hoping this complies with your request for no non-information...

I mounted the Tubus Fly with QR adaptors on my full Titanium road bike, and went on a 4 day credit card tour on it, carrying two very light panniers that totaled 10 pounds (panniers plus stuff). Road it over a few mountain passes in the rockies including about 10 miles of gravel road, could barely tell it was on the bike, no sway noticed. Had to bend the rack mount stay, per Tubus' directions, to make it fit. I was very pleased with the solution and will use it again. Takes about 5 minutes to mount or remove the rack, once the stay is set up - remove brake, install stay, replace brake, replace skewer.

Hope that helps at all, can't answer the question about the carbon brake bridge.

thanks a bunch!

You're welcome. I forgot to mention, www.thetouringstore.com is where I got it, this is a one-man operation, call and talk to Wayne, he sells the highest volume of Tubus product of any USA dealer, and should be able to answer any questions about carbon mounting.

I got an axiom Streamliner Road for my carbon. It was around $25 or so. It mounts on your rear skewer and behind your brake mount, i'm RREALLY glad i got it, love it. It doesn't work super well with a trunk bag (which is ok with me because i need the space of a pannier, and i like the weight lower) but works great with panniers.

Why are you wanting to use a trunk bag vs. panniers?

Hi,

Thank you very much for your suggestion. Is the brake mount point still free of any cracks or anything scary looking?

I have seen that rack before, in fact my brother has one on his bike. Thing is I think it's really ugly on the bike. I know, I know, but I've seen the tubus rack in person and they look decent or good so with a similar mounting system I prefer how the tubus rack looks better. Plus, I've seen the Tubus racks mounted in person and you can take the rack off without actually removing the brake, which is nice (don't like messing with important stuff like the brake screw if I can help it).

Old Man Mountain also makes a rack that would work, but it looks ugly in the pictures.

There's several reason why I don't want to use panniers. First I had panniers on another bike and found that when loaded they stuck out enough to cause noticeable wind resistance. I tried putting them on and taking them off several times and I felt there was a difference. Also, with panniers you often have to try to balance out the weight on each side and I'd rather not be biking along and realize I put my one heavy thing on one side and now the bike handles way differently. Finally, I think they look a little odd. I know some people think a rack on a road bike looks odd, but I feel like the trunk bag looks - less odd. Don't get me wrong, if I needed the space panniers provide I'd definitely use them, but I'd just prefer to stick with a trunk back if possible.

Thanks for your info! :-)

Where's that picture of the Cervelo and flip flops when you need it ...

My brake mount looks fine. If you're worried about the force on the frame from having the rack connect there, my guess is that there's more torque from hard braking (obviously rear brake) than from the rack.

It's pretty simple to install a brake to the frame, just screw it on snug.

I hear you on the wind resistance, but i haven't had any problem with balancing the load, I really don't notice it if it's unbalanced.

I do notice the additional weight (as compared to riding with no bags) and how it affects my handling. I think anywhere you put the weight it'll affect your handling, but the lower the better.

That's my guess to, just like hearing that a number of other people have tried and used it without problems developing.

Thanks again. :-)
