This morning's commute was not fun, had a couple mechanical issues which upset me. While I was pulled off into the parking lot of an abandoned diner, about 1/3 through my ride, a gentle soul on a fully loaded bike came riding up. I know the road he was on, and I could tell from the condition of his gear and his weather beaten skin that he'd been on the road a while. We chatted for a bit, he started down in Florida in March, and he's heading home to Rhode Island. He had battled through Manhattan (which he said was his worst day of the trip) and was continuing on to the ferry at Orient Point, NY to carry him home.
Had my seat not slipped on the seatpost, I would have blown through the intersection and not noticed him, but serendipity won out today.
If you're reading out there, thanks for stopping, Made my morning. Hope the rest of the "hills" on LI treat you well!
