Charity Events - California Coastal Ride For Hemophilia

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello,

A few years back my wife Tanya introduced me to her friend and colleague, Jennifer Mermilliod, and her husband Greg. The Mermilliods are the proud parents of two, Nathan and Emma, and Nathan, now seven years old, has Hemophilia B. Both Greg and Jennifer have been active in the Hemophilia Foundation of Southern California (HFSC), where they are board members and energetic volunteers for the Foundation's exciting events and invaluable advocacy work.

This year, as a fund raiser, the Foundation is putting on a bicycle ride along the California coast from San Francisco to San Diego, August 23-29, 2009 -- over 600 miles in 7 days! Greg and I have been riding together for a few years now, and he invited me to join him and a dedicated group of cyclists on this amazing adventure. As many of you know, I spend much of my time doing bicycle advocacy activities, such as running The Bicycle Lounge and helping to develop social networks like IEFixed.net. So The California Coastal Ride For Hemophilia is right up my alley.

The primary purpose of the ride is to raise awareness about hemophilia and to raise money for local and state groups so that they can continue to provide activities like their annual summer camp, outreach programs, and educational support to the hemophilia community.

As a friend of the Mermilliod family, and inspired by their energy and dedication to this worthy cause, I have committed to joining them on this challenge, but I need your help.

My goal is to raise $3000 by August 14 to secure a spot on the ride, and to contribute to the programs that help people like Nathan live a normal and productive life, free of any major long-term health problems caused by hemophilia. If you would like to join me in this effort, please make a tax-deductible contribution through this link:

Thank you so much for supporting me in this effort, and more importantly, for supporting kids like Nathan who need us to continue advocating for his cause.

Brian.

P.S.: For those curious about what we'll be riding, Greg and I will be doing part of the trip fixed-gear and part of the trip on touring bikes (where the terrain is impossibly hilly). We figure that kids like Nathan live with Hemophilia-related challenges every day -- challenges about which they have no choice -- so why not challenge ourselves to do at least part of the ride fixed-gear, where we simply deal with what the road hands us.
