Pacific Northwest - why does it always seem to be a pickup truck?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Pickup truck drivers on rural roads are the worst.
I don't like them and I am sure the feeling must be mutual as it appears at least to me that some appear to target cyclists.. The latest being this afternoon on my way home from work, no shoulder, light traffic'd rural road, 35mph speed limit. I'm riding maybe 6" from the edge of the road just inside the painted white line going 19mph, car approaching and all of the sudden I hear a diesel truck accellerate behind me blowing by less than a foot away.. Scared the heck outa me, especially by the second blast of air that swooshed by from the oversized dual wheeled trailer he was towing. What is it with drivers of pickup trucks? The guy could have lifted his lazy *****'d foot off the gas pedal for a few seconds till the approaching car had cleared then passed around me at a safe distance (there were no other cars behind him) but I guess in his feeble mind, he felt like his 'right' to not be held up by a bicycle was all that mattered and my safety was of no concern of his. I really have no idea what he was thinking but it happens too often and it's usually someone in a full size pickup. I've had them pass then turn right in front of me making me hit the brakes, others slow down, roll down their window and verbally harrass me, and the times (yes happens fairly regularly when the weather gets nice...) when a diesel truck slows down along side then floors the throttle just to blanket me in their exhaust cloud. Sometimes I wonder if the riding is actually safer in the city. OK ranting is over.

Pickups in the country, sports cars in suburbia. Take your pick.

Sorry this happened to you Northbend. I for one own a late '60s pickup truck and considerate of fellow bicyclists, yeah I'm a redneck in outlook, luv yogurt, don't spit chaw, won't discuss other adornments on my truck though. ;)

I have to agree-and the other side seems to be the small cars that go overboard and go completely in the other lane, giving you 15' of room! I have had rednecks in trucks coming from the opposite direction swerve into my direction just to buzz me.

Northbend-what road were you on?

A mirror lets a bicyclist be certain its a pickup truck approaching from behind. it won't just seem that way.

I got the finger from some guy in a Prius yesterday, verbally harassed by two kids in a station wagon with Vermont plates the day before.

Disrespect for bicyclists rides in all types of motor vehicles.

i've always assumed it was a culture clash of sorts. both sides make assumptions based on appearance.

my assumptions of them are: culturally conservative, probably a bigot, probably hates "****" & immagrants, etc, etc..

then their assumptions of us are: culturally liberal, rich (enough to have a bike & time to ride it), has gay friends, or possibly could be gay (i mean did you see what he had on?!), and probably "believes" in global warming. oh and probably voted for that obama guy. and supports the terrorists, etc, etc.

so, when these two mindsets collide (figuratively), it's no wonder they hate us, and they expect us to be already hating them.

so i guess at least they aren't shooting at us, right? i'm trying to find a positive here.

(although clifton has had nickels thrown at him a few times, hopefully that's as close as we'll come to getting shot)

Yep the pickup dudes are special. While riding out in Scholls Ferry and Bald Peak area, west of Beaverton, I have been harassed by 3 pickups and 1 guy in an older Mazda sedan.

I still have faith in people though. 4 months ago I had a bad crash and could hardly walk. Some total strangers (subaru wagon) stopped to help me and ended up transporting me 30 miles to my house.

I'm calmer tonite. Un eventful ride home. I will add that it was a guy in a pickup truck who stopped and gave me a ride home last summer after I had crashed breaking my collarbone from a crankarm failure on the same road (428th Ave just after crossing the middle fork of the snoqualmie river). Yea, I think we all to some degree have all put some faith in all strangers when we ride on the road or we wouldn't be out there.
