My wife broke the shift lever for her front derailleur yesterday. She has a 2000 Bianchi Eros with Campagnolo Mirage ErgoPower levers. Recently she's been having problems shifting from the middle chain ring to the large one (and sometimes down to and up from the smallest one). This time it appears the lever wasn't moving the derailleur and she forced the lever and snapped it off just below the pivot point. It broke off while she was on a slight downhill, so there wasn't a lot of load or pressure on the chain or derailleur.
I haven't spent much time fixing or adjusting bikes, so I'm wondering if anyone here can tell me what may have caused the problem? Is the problem possibly with the derailleur? Or the cable? Is something too tight?
We're taking it to our LBS today, but I'm looking for some insight here. It's not a problem I think should happen. Especially since my wife takes good care of her bike and has it regularly serviced at our LBS (where she bought the bike).
