...just wait longer..
On my way to Homewood from Wrigleyville...Estimated distance..37 miles...
I'll be taking Halsted all the way down to approx 183rd Street...
So, 165 and SkitBra...if you don't hear from me in a couple days, I may have found me a nice little ditch on the South side to lay in...jk..
adios...
while your down there hit up the old plank trail.
paved with a good little hilly section near new lennox.
have fun.

You'll be fiiiiiiiiiiiine. I've done that ride before, and I have some friends that do that ride quite a few times and it's not so bad. A little dicey around 90th, but clears up by 120th or so.
Try Western Ave sometime. Now that's a ride I find a bit... dicey. The traffic runs a ton faster than on Halsted. At least on Halsted, the speed limit is like under 40, but Western Ave. has trucks, and sometimes, the traffic seems to slice right by you.
I haven't rode Torrence yet, but I heard it was a sweet ride...
Good luck!

Being an out of towner, I found Western a bit intimidating, in a car.

I rode from 4328th street to 4745th. Goddamn urban sprawl. Your 'burbs have spread to CNY. :D

Well, I did archer to cicero, cicero to 183rd on my track bike. and lemme tell you.
CICERO SUCKS. no brakes on a 4 lane hwy style thing, and i got "a pants stuck in fixie terror moment" crossing 111th into Alsip. blah.
you'll be fine, just keep your head up and dont dawdle
It dawned on me when I was last there that I live in a bubble here in the Twin Cities. Watching your news, driving your streets, the day's shootings presented as factoids going into a commercial break. Here it's a major story where all 4 stations get out with their trucks and sattelite uplinks, microwave connections, to report the month's shooting.
Keep your head down, don't dawdle, wear a kevlar vest.

Halsted? Damn that is a slow ride though, lots of slow traffic to say the least.

what up singlespeed..
the ride was SWEET!
too bad I had to call it quits at 55th and Halsted...
Right before the ride I switched back to my Sidi's and BS SPD's, and 10 miles into it, my right now was ON FIRE!!! My IT band hasnt been the same since that 100 miles to Milwaukee...I screwed it up pretty good somehow on the Ides Ride a few weeks ago, and have been trying to adjust to clips ever since. I haven't become too accustomed to clips, nor do I feel really connected with them...so, figured my knee was all healed up and Id be fine with the SPDs...guess not...
I shlept (sp?) myself and my bike to 55th and the Metra Electric train, locked up under a street light, and hopped on the metra train to Homewood...
After two nights alone, hope my baby is still in tact... if the worst happens, I do have another wheel already built up, another tire, another tube, another seat...so, hopefully the frame and rear wheel is still there...
Ill be in Hyde Park in the morning at 11 to pick her up, then Im off to Clark and 18th for bike polo....
If anybody lives close to 55th, 30 yards east of the metra tracks is my baby...keep an eye on her!!!

Don't got riding Western or Cicero or even Halsted if you're coming south. I've got the routes that'll get you to 183 and Crawford (Pulaski) with few problems. Damen is the best street. Take it into Beverly then zigzag over to Kedzie at about 107 and take that straight out. Depending how far west you're going, Central Park is a good one, gets nice and quiet at 150th. I've got a couple cool rides we could do: Lake Calumet Loop, or Cemetary Loop (take you out to the old St. James Cemetary on Archer). We would leave from Promontory Point at 55th and the Lakefront. Tuesday noon. Except not this Tuesday as my legs are fried and I need rest day. Got a couple of midnight rides too. We can leave from Water Tower and bomb through the city at night. Thursday midnight is great. Mayo's Midnight Flare Ride we could call it. We each get one of those roadside emergency flares and ride through the streets with them in our hands jazzing the summer tourists.
Crusted, did you get your bike back? I'd be extremely wary of leaving it overnight anywhere, let alone two.
