Hard to choose, but Never Been Gone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdnUZD2aqSE) gets missed sometimes. It's simply beautiful.

Airwick, not to upset you, but Carly Simon always reminds me of Carole King.
It's too late (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YzHfVaqP1s) being one of my favorites.
Who do you think is the best artist between Carole and Carly?

wow, what a super question,...
but it's not that hard, Airwick.
Both ladies are super duper talented singer songwriters with marvelous voices.
Carole's Tapestry is one of the greatest albums of all-time.
Carly, however, matched her song for song in the seventies and continues to write beautiful music.
So, my answer would have to be Carly for the longevity of her career.
Carole is great though,.... So Far Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urt2cy7AqFs&feature=related)
would be my favorite Carole song,......

i'm just sayin' carole's a better songwriter and jazzman is her best song. carly's a better stage presence
and has a much better voice. i'd pay to see carly perform but not carole. now if carly has carole's songwriting ability (and her own) as well as that voice and stage presence all rolled into one, carly would
be better than even britney!:)

We will have to agree to disagree about which version is better. My opinion is based only on the audio recordings, not video or you tube appeal.
IMO, Aretha is the one artist who could reliably cover a hit from another very good artist and make it all her own and make the song even better. Examples:
Respect (originally a hit by Otis Redding)
I Say a Little Prayer for You (originally a hit by Dionne Warwick)
You Send Me (originally a hit by Sam Cooke)
Gentle on My Mind (originally a hit by Glen Campbell)
Groovin' (originally a hit by The Young Rascals)
Tracks of My Tears (originally a hit by The Miracles)
etc.

well, carly's best album-no secrets-from 1972 is very good. much of her discography is spotty or
erratic. her best songs are outstanding. she seems to me almost a singles format artist vs an
album format where she was forced to "fill" the rest of the album with material not even close to the
quality of her singles. joni embraced the album format; not going for the home run but trying to load the bases. joni's stretch from 1970-1976 includes a remarkable group of albums-best known is
court & spark. 1975-1976 found her gravitating towards incorporating jazz/world music much to the
chagrin of (many) fans & critics. to roughly paraphrase rolling stone magazine, her album-the hissing
of summer lawns (prince's favorite album, btw)-was the worst album release by a major artist in 1975. i think they gave it one star. now, it's considered a 4.5-5 star album. she's was a bit ahead of her time and a little more outspoken than most of her fellow musicians then. she has collaborated or
played with jazz legends such as charles mingus, jaco pastorius, herbie hancock, pat metheny & wayne shorter-all giants in the annals of jazz. true, her best known songs to the public are probably:
help me-written & sung by joni
both sides, now-written & sung by joni but popularized by judy collins
woodstock-written & sung by joni but popularized by crosby, stills, nash & young
big yellow taxi-written, sung & popularized by joni but covered frequently
clearly, none of these equal carly's you're so vain in terms of sheer pop culture awareness but joni nearly always had the big picture in mind. carly never pushed the envelope of the singer/songwriter
genre.
