A Polk County jail officer was hit and seriously injured while riding her bike. Does anyone think that because one of their own was hit by a motorist the Polk county Sheriff's Dept. will make it a point to see that justice is done to the guy who hit her?

We all know how biased law enforcment is regarding cyclists. They tend to favor the motorist when responding to a motor vehicle/bicycle collision/incident. Rarely is appropriate and adequate justince done to punish drivers who hit cyclists. But when something happens to one of their own only then do they step up and do something about it. What is your opinion of this one?

Several years ago San Diego lost a well-regarded 40-something deputy DA and mother of two, who was struck by a somnolent motorist while jogging. No charges were ever filed against the 18-year-old driver, who was returning home at 0800 from an all-night grad party.

No, the car still takes priority over the police fraternity. See a previous thread I made on this very topic (How to get away with killing a cop (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=486695)).

No charges filed in cyclist's death

Prosecutors said Friday that no criminal charges would be filed against a man whose car struck and killed a bicyclist this past summer near Lawrence.

Instead, they recommended that the Kansas Highway Patrol ticket Kyle Van Meter for several driving violations in the June 28 death of David Dillon, a lieutenant with the sheriff’s office. Among the charges recommended were unsafe passing, following too closely and failure to wear a seat belt.

Dillon died at the scene on Douglas County Road 1400. Van Meter admitted he was distracted by his radio and did not see Dillon until he hit him.

I have seen a lot of accidents where someone was killed and nobody got a ticket. It's not just cyclists, although there is serious reluctance to charge someone for the death of a cyclist or jogger. However, there was an accident here recently where a truck driver was killed as he climbed from his truck. The police said the driver is going to be charged with something.
