Introductions - Greetings - Israel

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
As a newcomer to this forum I take the opportunity to introduce myself: 52 y, 6'1", originally Californian, road with North Hollywood Wheelmen, raced in Junior category 1968/9, moved to Israel 1977 where my bike activities were very limited, now I recently took up the sport and am involved in forming a new club in the south (Negev). My current bike is a Hetchins (English) bought in 1972 in Tottenham and now I am interested in upgrading to something less archaic. I am currently faced with a choice between Kestrel 200 SCI and Trek 5200 (both used). Since the these new carbon fibre bikes and components are completely new to me, I would really appreciate any advice about these models.
Thanks for your help
Bert

I know little about anything that is very new or old. Just an urban commuter, here. Still, I'd love to be able to say that I ride a '72 Tottenham.
Welcome to the forums. There aren't many Isralies here. It's nice to have others from the wider world. We can ignore your North Hollywood roots.

Nice. Israel. Shalom! Manishma? Beseder?
To me Hetchins represents the standard for the art of bike making - English craftmanship at its best. He paid attention to detail and beauty. His lug work is fantastic and the bike as a whole looks like a work of art (somethiing that does not exist in the new generation bikes). Unfortunately replacement parts are becoming too expensive and since I do train with a group I weighed the cost of upgrading my bike or getting another and it came out infavor of getting another bike.
I spent about half my life in both places - it's kind of hard for me to ignore the first half.

It's alright. It gets very hot in the summer here. I may be going to University of Tel Aviv or Bar Ilan for a year.
