Utility Cycling - It is spring. Time for a new Dogbike.

Official name for this one is "Dogbike2". I am donating Dogbike1 to a recykeling school.

Not quite finished, want to paint the fork black and put a slightly smaller chainwheel in the front, reroute the gear cable, add an extra rim brake for the rear wheel (has got a Nexus7 w coaster) to a total of three brakes.

I decided on 622-32 for now, wanted speed more than carrying heavy loads.

Not sure when I can finish the bike. My dear friend David died today, so there is no working on dogbike for some time :(.

Love it. I've got a 5 month old Golden Retriever and he loves to ride. Started out riding him in a grocery pannier, but he outgrew that by 12 weeks. Bought a 100lbs max weight child trailer off craigslist and made it comfy for a dog. He can't get enough. Enjoy.

I am thinking of keeping the black seatpost and adding a black stem. Top nut of headset black plus cabelhanger for front brake and fork. This work is in progress.

Also want a smaller crank chainring for it for lower gears. This is the original one, used to be a Swedish Cresent 12 speed w drops.

This bike is the first one that is welded, and the rear is in alu. I was lucky to find an alu full suspension as a donorbike. Used two alu handlebars to extend the top tube of the rear triangle. No detail pictures yet but you`ll get some later.

I was lucky some time back to find a local welder that do what I tell him to do without asking or judging. Looking forwards to showing him the result. he did not quite know what he was making I think :D.

There are some lumps on the seatstays. This is left overs from a destroyed lock, want to grind them off later.

I think this type of bike needs a spring going from the fender/brake nut on the front fork to the down tube (like in the old days) to help control the front wheel when loading and parking the bike. I am working on that.

badmother - You may have a really hard time with the bb on that bike as Crescent used a number of different bottom brackets and it could very well be Swiss (rare), French (obsolete), or the even rarer Thompson bottom bracket.

The Thompson resembles an Astabula but is not the same thing.

Phil Wood does make retaining rings for everything except Astabula cranks but it is a pricey option, Swiss bottom brackets are very rare, and although they are obsolete servicing a French threaded bb just got easier as Velo Orange will be releasing a sealed cartridge with French threading.

Some Crescents had a Swiss bb and a French threaded headset to make things just that much more interesting.

Sounds scary. It looks normal from the outside (shell size) but there is a plastic cowering so I am not sure what is under. I decided to go for it since these bikes plus DBS bikes (from approx 1980`s) with the same BB used to be as common as empty bottles around here, so I think both "older bikeshops" and bikegurus know the BB and what to do. There is a guy a few hours by car from here that has got all sort of parts for all sort of bikes. His shop was famous and he is still around. My first problem would be getting the old one out you see, but I decided to go for it. I`ve got a mixte frame lying around that was the other candidate for this build so no panic. I`ll get back with info on this one.

Older DBS bikes (like my BMX folders) has got a different system. Bigger (and narrower) BB shell but not American or BMX. I ended up grinding down a BB shell from a modern bike and epoxy it in place. Works fine so I want to weld them in place in the future. As long as epoxy is cheap ..:)

For some reason a whte vintage Peugot makes me thinkof you. Found one too late in a dumpster yesterday.Already crushed to make space for more. Great paint, white mixte w dropbars and ok parts :cry:

Thanks... but I really don't know that much (and am often baffled) and just do a lot of reading and studying of those who have gone before me.

I do tend to run into a lot of odd things and many really old bikes at the shop... we have had more than a few Crescents come in and several had Thompson bottom brackets.

I have never seen a Crescent of that design... all have been road bikes of medium quality.

I have yet to encounter a Swiss threaded bb here while I have become intimate with the challenges old French bikes offer and most of that stems from a lack of available parts.

I am learning new things every day...

Used it for a small tour (one night) this summer. Here it is travelling on a more than 150 yrs old steamboat (2,5 hrs trip). Rode back home:

Just try! Mine jumped off twice and then decided that is not smart. Also he really like to go for rides, and i guess he has learned that when he is tired or when it is really hot he is lucky to get a lift. Often he sits there at the beginnng of a trip. Going to the nearest town is almost only downhill. He then sits there for approx 15 km before he is let to run beside the bike. Going back home he runs most of the way. This is also a great way to ride trough traffic. Riding with the cars is not doable if he is running next to me, and riding with him on the sidewalk is not an option. First time you try yours make sure he is tired and far from home, he`ll be motivated then.

I love your dog bike. My dog hates riding in the trailer I have. I think she's terrified because she's down low and can't see me. I'm considering getting a Torker Cargo T this year and putting a large basket on the front rack that would hold her. She doesn't move around much in the trailer, I have a seat belt harness that holds her in place. She just cries constantly and it gets louder the farther we go. I think she might be calm if she was higher and could see me. At least I'm hoping that's the case. I'd love to take her into the forest with me.

Thinking that I should be taking my furballs out for a spin now that the weather is starting to get nice... with smaller dogs the carrying part gets a lot easier and my Shih Tzu loves going for rides.

All I had to do was get some proper baskets and they have also ridden in my panniers.

Not exactly Dog Bikes ...... but they do contain cycle componants, and are hauled by dogs.

More than once I`ve been thinking my dog is much smarter than me. He trained me to build a bike for him (several actually), and to haul him around ... :D

Actually I often put a proper harness on him and let him help pulling. Seen this link before and like it a lot. I think a lot of dogs would be MUCH happyer if they could run and pull like this. We try to turn them into humans and forget they are dogs.

Hen I was young I had a horse and used him for all sorts of things (that the adults did not know about). Used to hang behind him on skis on the forrest roads. Of course we had no control (no way you have any power to pull the reins when doing that). It all went well becouse the horse enjoyed it alot, an also he was smarter than us (at fourteen) and realised he had to behave..

Maybe he is just exited (or has some sort of angsiety) Try a sip of wine (for him) before you go..

Mine gets wery stressed around other dogs. Happy but totally winded up. I know it can be dealt with and I am the one that should do something. Funny thing is he stays in the bag when we ride close to other dogs. Waves his tail alot but stays where he is.

I like your fur balls. This is the size of dog I was thinking of getting, but then I got an SMS abot the BC, almost starved and beated to death (19 kg`s then, 26 now) and just could not say no. He is a great and happy guy. I think his past is part of the seecret why he REALLY wants to make me happy and do what I want him to do (like ride the dogbike or "go to the forrest and pee" on his own ad straight back to the house - forrest is just behind the house).

Not sure about BB, I`ll look at it later.

Badmother....out of curiosity....where is that Steamboat located? (my guess is Sverige)

the beagle/basset cross our family just fostered for few weeks would of been perfect for the trike version of this. he was like a tank for pulling and a cruise missile when running. was nice to jog with him but very hard to stop.
