Road Cycling - Bike Fitting & Blood Letting: Report

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I got my bike fit to me, and last night was the first ride. My saddle was too far forward, my stem was too long, and my cleats were in the wrong spot, and my left leg is longer than my right (or is that vice-versa...anyway, they shimmed the right cleat). I got out and found that I'm about .5 mph faster with no additional effort. I maintained a 25 mile loop (part of IMMOO loop near cross plains) with an average speed of 16.7 mph. My averages on non-hilly rides have been in the low 16's, so I was pretty happy.
The bad news, the pain in my right hip is related to my lack of fitness, and donating blood has done a serious number on how quickly I get winded and my HR average.
All in all, I'd say the fit was great, and well worth the money, but I won't be donating blood before any major events I want to do. Now all I need to do is get out and ride :)

how much was the fitting (if you don't mind me asking)? did you buy a new bike, or did you take the one you currently own in?

All new cyclists have a period of time that it takes to be broken in.. Start off in slow steps. Make micro adjustments saddle/peddle/handlebar positions..
I got a bike fitting with my Klein...Rode off pretty comfortably.. Take it back..Shop should check out their work? Expect gradual results until you get comfortable..Don't overreact..Many of us go through this before we get comfortable...
I brought in the bike I had. $120 or so for the fitting (A soretta fiting shop). I mentioned the hip thing and my neck pain, and he suggested the neck was all fit, and the hip was likely a combo of being new to riding...something about hip flexors and positioning and hard riding, and the cleat position. My neck felt great, and the hip wasn't as bad as it was pre-fit, and it only happens when I try to ride hard or when there are many big hills. For easy rides, I'm fine, so I don't think its the fit. I plan on riding a few more weeks to see what happens before I go back to the shop.

Dog Boy. Not sure what a professional fitting involves for sure..What they did for me..Asked me to bring in my cycling shoes.I was totally ready, since I planed to ride my new Klein home...
They adjusted the saddle, peddles, handlebars. No charge...Measured me as if I were being fitted for a tux...Sat on the bike and adjusted away..
Is this what a fitting involves....For this shop a Klein was a near to top end bike..Thought the fitting service just a part of buying a new bike..
I would say you have to break your bike in as long as yourself..Make minor adjustments and until you are bike fit , and work your way into the sport gradually..
it will be burning up enough of your time before you know it..
