I'm brand spankin new to mt biking and found a mt jefferson on cl for $50. They say it's new, is it a good deal? Good beginner bike for weekend rides with the family?

That sounds like a "model name", any idea of the "brand name" of this bicycle?? $50 ain't much even for a USED bike, can't imagine it's more than a "Wal-Mart" special, which it's best to avoid, (I know this from experiance!). You'd be a A LOT better off, going to a LBS (Local Bicycle Store) and get a "proper fitting" Entry Level MTB, jmho. My wifes Jamis Trail-X 1.0 is well below $400 and you might even be able to find some "leftover" 2008 models of MTB's at your local shops on sale. IF you do buy a bike off of CL's PLEASE do yourself a favor and take it to a local LBS for a full "TUNE UP", it will be the best $50 to $90 dollars you'll ever spend and make your bike way more enjoyable to ride, YMMV.:)
