Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Fixed gear century on 5-16; wish me luck!

I made a bet with my friends on Facebook: If I got to $300 in donations for the Tour de Cure, I'd ride my singlespeed. If I got to $500, I'd flip my wheel and ride it fixed.
Well... once two of my friends show me that they've filled out corporate matching for their donations, I'll be over the $500 mark, and being a man of my word, I will be riding the Tour de Cure century this Saturday on my 1988 Trek 400 fixed gear conversion.
This will be my 5th century (or longer; one 300k) for the year, but my first ever which I've done on my fixed gear.

Good luck with that. A new challenge for you riding a fixed gear that far.

They used to do the TdF on fixed gears so a little ol' one day century should be easy. :D Good luck!

You shouldn't have any trouble. I have done a few centuries on my track bike and don't find it any harder than on a geared bike. Except for long downhills of course, 40mph gets kind of busy.;)

our TDC had a guy who rode a unicycle for the last 10 or so miles (100k was longest ride option we had though)... he rolled most of it on a SS with the uni strapped to his back...
er anyway :) good luck man... never done the fixxie thing... want to try it out on my new to me '92 trek 400 :)

We have a ride up here called the Chilly Hilly; 33 miles and 2800' of gain, and there's a couple guys who do it on tall-wheeler unicycles. Amazing to see them flying along.

Video from the finish line. (http://qik.com/video/1685534) One tired Sasquatch.
Congratulations to everyone else who went out and rode this weekend, no matter the distance. Sure as hell beats sitting on the couch.

There has been some discussion on another website about whether it was possible to do a fully-coasting century ride (ie, 100 miles downhill). This would be some of those winding roads following rivers down through valleys. That would be more my style. I would rather give up the pedaling part than the coasting part!
Congratulations on the achievement. May your legs recover quickly.

Sure, fly to La Paz, Bolivia (the worlds highest city with an altitude or 3660m (12,008') and ride down the mountains, toward the much lower interior jungle.

I've put out the feelers for all my contacts (and here) that if I raise $2K for the Courage Classic (http://www.couragetours.com/2009/y33dave) - I'll do all 3 days in my KILT !

Seriously outstanding effort and accomplishment. Did I mention it's a bit nutz, lol.

Thanx everyone for the congrats.
Would I consider a fixed century again? Only if the course was flat.
How about singlespeed? That would be a better idea.
I only did the fixed gear as a challenge promise for fundraising. I don't think I'd do it again, but who knows... maybe I am that crazy to try it again sometime.
It was a fun time, the weather and the course were great, and I only had to walk 1 hill (at the 91 mile mark, it's a 9% grade for 0.3mi) when my legs just gave up.

Congrats man, go get them.
Congrats and welcome to the fixie century club. I did one last fall, but its called the Flattest Century in the East (which it is not). Still, I bonked from not drinking enough early on, I underestimated my intake. I did recover at the end, but it wasn't really fun. Yet I am thinking of doing it again too. I almost flopped the rear wheel, but I held on. You done good.
