Mountain Biking - What the heck is the difference???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Can someone tell me the difference between these XTR rear derailleurs? RD-M972-GS and SGS. I can see that they're different in pictures but features make them different. I can't seem to find the answer on the Shimano site.

Thanks,
Mike

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please-

The difference is in the jockey cage length. Also specified in teeth capacity.

GS is mid length. SGS is the long cage version, which wraps more chain - needed if when you have a wide gear range like 22/34/44 front and 11/34 rear

i think the diff is cage lenght, the gs has a lower "capacity" than the sgs, the sgs looks like the long cage version,

edit: ^lol i got double beaten to it

SS = Super Sport (short cage)

GS = Gran Sport (mid cage)

SGS = Super Gran Sport (long cage)

Total capacity RD-M972:
GS = 33 (enough for [22/32]x[11-34])
SGS = 45 (enough for [22/32/44]x[11-34])

SS = Super Sport (short cage)It will still fit in the trunk of your '67 Chevelle.

GS = Gran Sport (mid cage)It'll still fit in the trunk of your Uncle's Buick.

SGS = Super Gran Sport (long cage)Fold the back seat down Grandpa's Vista Cruiser.

LOL, Doug!

Still lust for a SS396.

My mom had a '66 Nova , plain stock, bench seat, auto on the tree, basically unassuming by all appearances. The fact that it had (surprise!) a 327 was pretty much lost on her. But I knew better!

I knew it would be something that I was looking at but not seeing. I guess that's what I get for trying to rush surf the net before clocking out at work. Mind was on other things.

Thanks all,
Mike
